Document your procurement specialization clearly
Your DS-2019 training plan must map your procurement focus, whether that's strategic sourcing, contract management, or supplier relations, to specific learning objectives. Vague descriptions of general business duties are the most common reason training plans get rejected by designated sponsors.
Match your J-1 category to your career stage
Current students and recent graduates within 12 months of graduation qualify for the Intern category. Working professionals with a procurement degree and at least one year of post-graduation experience must apply under the Trainee category, which has a 18-month maximum duration.
Target host employers with procurement training infrastructure
Designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas and AIPT require host employers to demonstrate structured training environments. Procurement roles at companies with formal rotational programs or dedicated supply chain departments are far easier to place with a sponsor than ad-hoc contracting positions.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned procurement roles
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting international exchange visitors in procurement and supply chain functions. Filtering by role type saves significant time compared to cold-applying and hoping a host employer already has a designated sponsor relationship.
Verify your home-country residency requirement before accepting offers
Procurement Trainee participants sponsored by government funding or certain exchange programs may be subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement after completing the program. Confirm your DS-2019 coding with your designated sponsor before signing any offer letter.
Align your offered wage with DOL prevailing rates
Your host employer's training stipend or salary must meet the prevailing wage for your procurement role and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the wage level before your training plan is submitted, since underpayment is a compliance flag that can delay DS-2019 issuance.
Procurement J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a procurement professional?
It depends on your status. If you're currently enrolled in a degree program or graduated within the past 12 months, the Intern category applies to procurement, supply chain, and sourcing roles. If you have a procurement-related degree and at least one year of post-graduation professional experience, you fall under the Trainee category, which supports placements of up to 18 months.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a procurement role?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE issue your DS-2019 form, review and sign your training plan, and monitor program compliance. The company where you work is the host employer, not the visa sponsor. Your host and your designated sponsor are two separate entities with distinct legal responsibilities.
How do I find procurement host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for identifying U.S. employers in procurement and supply chain who are open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Many companies don't advertise their willingness to work with designated sponsors in job postings, so searching platforms that surface this alignment directly saves considerable time and avoids dead ends.
What goes into the training plan for a procurement J-1 placement?
The training plan, submitted on Form DS-7002, must outline specific procurement competencies you'll develop, such as contract negotiation, supplier evaluation, or procurement software systems. Each phase should have defined learning objectives tied to your professional development goals. Your designated sponsor will review the plan for substance and reject vague or task-focused descriptions that read more like a job description than a structured training program.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to procurement trainees?
It can. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies to J-1 participants whose programs are funded by the U.S. or home-country government, or whose home country lists their field on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Procurement is a common field in several countries' skills lists. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your specific DS-2019 carries this requirement before making long-term plans around extending your U.S. stay.
