Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Software Engineer Intern
Align your academic program with your internship
The J-1 Intern category requires your role to relate directly to your current degree field. A computer science or software engineering enrollment record strengthens your DS-2019 application and reduces the risk of sponsor rejection during document review.
Request a structured training plan from your host
Your host employer must complete a formal Training or Internship Placement Plan before your sponsor issues the DS-2019. Ask the hiring manager early whether they have an existing template, since sponsors like CIEE or Cultural Vistas require this document to process your file.
Search roles on Migrate Mate to surface J-1-aligned employers
Not every tech company understands the distinction between hosting a J-1 intern and sponsoring an H-1B. Use Migrate Mate to find Software Engineer Intern openings at employers already familiar with the host-company model and DS-2019 paperwork requirements.
Verify the host company is E-Verify enrolled
Some State Department-designated sponsors require the host employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before issuing the DS-2019. Confirm enrollment status with your recruiter before accepting an offer, since late-stage discovery can delay your program start date.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Certain J-1 participants, particularly those funded by their home government or from specific countries, are subject to a two-year home residency requirement after the program ends. Ask your designated sponsor whether your profile triggers this condition before you accept the role.
Time your offer acceptance around DS-2019 processing
Sponsor organizations typically need two to four weeks to issue a DS-2019 after receiving a completed training plan and employer paperwork. Build that window into your start-date negotiation so you don't accept an offer with a timeline your sponsor cannot meet.

Find Software Engineer Intern JobsSoftware Engineer Intern J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Software Engineer Intern positions?
Current students pursuing a degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field typically enter the U.S. under the J-1 Intern category. This category is specifically designed for students who are enrolled or graduated within the past 12 months and whose internship directly relates to their field of study. Professionals who completed their degree more than 12 months ago would need to qualify under the J-1 Trainee category instead, which has different eligibility and duration rules.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Software Engineer Intern?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring company. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and IIE issue the DS-2019 form, monitor your compliance with program rules, and serve as the official sponsor on record. Your tech employer is the host company, responsible for your day-to-day work and for completing the required training plan, but they do not hold sponsor status under the Exchange Visitor Program regulations.
How do I find Software Engineer Intern roles that are open to J-1 Intern participants?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Software Engineer Intern positions at U.S. employers who are familiar with hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Many tech companies, particularly those that have never hosted a J-1 intern, may not realize they need to partner with a designated sponsor organization and complete a training plan. Targeting employers with prior J-1 hosting experience significantly reduces the back-and-forth during the offer and DS-2019 preparation stage.
Can I convert my J-1 Intern status to an H-1B after my internship ends?
You can apply for H-1B sponsorship after your J-1 Intern program ends, but the two-year home residency requirement may apply to you depending on your home country, your funding source, and your field. If that requirement applies, you cannot change to H-1B or most other work visa categories until you fulfill it or obtain a waiver. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your specific profile triggers this condition before planning any transition.
What happens to my J-1 status if my Software Engineer Intern role ends early?
If your internship ends before your DS-2019 program end date, your designated sponsor must be notified immediately. J-1 Intern participants have a 30-day grace period after the program end date to prepare to depart the U.S., but this grace period begins when the program is terminated, not when your DS-2019 expires. You cannot work during the grace period, so any gap between internships requires a new DS-2019 through a sponsor before you can legally begin a new role.
