The Opportunity:
Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Health & Safety Director to lead company-wide occupational health, safety, and environmental protection programs tailored to project-based field work, remediation sites, laboratories, and client facilities. This role ensures regulatory compliance, reduces project and corporate risk, advises project teams and clients on EHS and hazardous materials management, and embeds practical safety solutions into proposals, project planning, and operations.
The position can be performed remotely from in or near a major U.S. metropolitan city. The position involves infrequent travel to attend recruiting events and meet Tetra Tech team members.

Essential Job Functions:
- Develop, implement, and maintain an EHS management system tailored for consulting/project work (field sampling, remediation, construction support, lab activities, drilling, confined-space entry, vehicle operations, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, state environmental agencies), industry best practices, and client requirements; maintain permits, regulatory notifications, and reporting protocols.
- Support project lifecycle: review scopes of work, perform pre-project risk assessments and job hazard analyses (JHAs/JSAs), specify required PPE, monitoring, and controls for bids and proposals.
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations on projects and corporate operations; perform root-cause analysis, implement corrective/preventive actions, and communicate lessons learned to project teams and clients.
- Oversee hazardous materials and waste handling programs (RCRA/TSDF interfaces, waste profiling, chain-of-custody), decontamination protocols, and emergency spill/response planning.
- Manage occupational health programs relevant to field staff and lab personnel, including medical surveillance, exposure monitoring (air, noise, chemical), respirator programs, and return-to-work coordination.
- Design and deliver role-specific training: HAZWOPER (e.g., 40/24/8/8-hour refreshers), confined-space entry, fall protection, respirator fit-testing, sampling safety, driving safety, and client-specific orientation programs.
- Conduct routine site and lab safety audits, pre-mobilization inspections, and subcontractor EHS prequalification and oversight.
- Integrate safety and environmental controls into project design reviews (remediation systems, temporary works), and advise engineering teams on constructability with safe-work considerations.
- Maintain relationships with regulators, insurance carriers, contracted emergency response teams, and third-party auditors.
- Provide EHS input for proposals and client communications; support technical writing for safety sections of proposals, work plans, and health & safety plans (HASPs).
- Lead, mentor, and develop the EHS team and field safety champions; set measurable goals and support career development.
- Manage EHS budget, insurance/claims interfaces, and initiatives to lower project risk and insurance costs.
- Promote a proactive safety culture across office and field staff through visible leadership and incentives.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related technical field.
- 10+ years of EHS experience with at least 5 years in a leadership role within environmental consulting, remediation, construction, or related project-based services.
- Direct experience with field operations: environmental site assessments (Phase I/II), remediation, drilling, trenching, confined space, and/or sampling programs.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards (including HAZWOPER), EPA hazardous-waste regulations (RCRA/CERCLA basics), DOT hazardous materials transport, and common state environmental program requirements.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and implementing HASPs, JHAs, permit-required confined space programs, and respiratory protection programs.
- Proven ability to perform and interpret exposure monitoring and sampling results or to coordinate with industrial hygienists and laboratories.
- A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) — preferred.
- HAZWOPER trainer certification (40-hour instructor) and/or OSHA Outreach Trainer (10/30-hour).
- Professional Engineer (PE) in environmental or civil engineering — advantageous for technical credibility.
- CESSWI (Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead), CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) or similar.
- First Aid/CPR/AED and Incident Command System (ICS) training.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent field work in varied environments — construction sites, active remediation areas, confined spaces, remote locations, and inclement weather.
- Ability to wear required PPE and perform physical inspections, including climbing ladders, accessing excavations, and prolonged walking.
- Travel: typically 25–50% depending on project distribution (adjust to company needs).
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
- Work will be performed in an office and field setting.
- Field work will include exposure to various environmental factors including weather conditions, hazardous materials, construction sites, and more. Office work will include prolonged periods of time sitting or standing at a desk using a computer and other office equipment.
Additional Information:
- Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required.
Technical & Leadership Skills
- Technical writing and documentation skills: develop HASPs, safety sections for work plans, technical proposals, and incident reports.
- Strong client-facing and consulting skills: explain technical risk controls clearly to clients and project teams.
- Analytical skills to interpret incident trends, exposure data, and audit results and translate into prioritized actions.
- Leadership, coaching, and change management capability to influence field crews, subcontractors, and senior leadership.
- Familiarity with EHS management software, incident tracking, and basic GIS or environmental data tools helpful.

Performance Objectives (first 12 months) — examples
- Implement standardized HASP/JHA templates and achieve 100% adoption on new projects within 6 months.
- Reduce lost-time incidents and recordables by X% year-over-year and increase near-miss reporting by Y% within 12 months.
- Achieve full compliance on external audits of selected project sites (no major findings) within 9 months.
- Integrate EHS review into the proposal process for 100% of high-risk project bids within 3 months.
Target salary range: $75,000.00 to $120,000.00.
