Independent journalism is the lifeblood of The Stranger. The paper needs a new Editor in Chief who can meet this moment in history, take bold editorial risks with a strong vision, adeptly manage a growing team, attract and retain stellar writers with diverse perspectives, and lead the iconic and beloved 35-year-old publication into its next chapter.
The Editor in Chief will be responsible for developing an ambitious, forward-looking, and positive vision for what The Stranger covers and how it covers it. The Editor should make clear, opinionated decisions about voice, priorities, and tone; publish work that people argue about; and be comfortable with that argument. They should understand the importance of a mix of visionary features and investigations, provocative and smart arts and culture coverage and criticism, strong news reporting, humor, and edgy content that pushes the envelope. An ideal candidate will be familiar with a variety of storytelling formats and demonstrate a commitment to the highest ethical standards of journalistic integrity.
The typical schedule is Monday through Friday (though you may be asked to work nights and weekends on occasion). Some telecommuting is allowed, as approved by the Publisher. The Editor in Chief must be able to attend regular meetings at The Stranger’s offices on Capitol Hill and generally work from the office to better lead and support employees. Candidates should include a cover letter articulating a brief vision for The Stranger's next era.

Managing Editor Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a managing editor in Washington?
Managing editor is not a state-licensed role in Washington, so there is no board exam or state credential required. Most Washington employers expect a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or English, followed by several years of reporting, editing, or content production experience. Building a portfolio of published work and moving through staff writer or associate editor roles at Washington news organizations, technology companies, or publications is the most direct path to a managing editor position.
Which companies hire managing editors in Washington?
Washington managing editor roles are posted by TEGNA, Amazon, and Noisy Creek and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Washington's concentration of technology headquarters and established regional news outlets means openings appear across both legacy media and content-heavy corporate communications teams.
Which Washington cities have the most managing editor jobs?
Seattle, Olympia, and Spokane account for the largest share of managing editor openings in Washington. Seattle dominates because of its dense mix of major technology employers, regional news organizations, and digital media companies, while Bellevue and Tacoma benefit from corporate content teams and community news outlets anchored by the broader Puget Sound economy.
Are there remote managing editor jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of managing editor openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how thoroughly editorial workflows have shifted to distributed collaboration tools. The most fully remote opportunities tend to be at technology companies and digital-only publications, while roles requiring in-person news judgment or print production oversight are more likely to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a managing editor in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a staff writer or associate editor role at a Washington news organization or a content team at a Seattle-area technology company, then building toward editorial oversight. The Seattle Times, Crosscut, and university-affiliated publications in Washington regularly bring on early-career editors. A strong clips portfolio, familiarity with a major CMS, and any experience coordinating even a small team or publication give candidates a clear edge over applicants with coursework alone.
