Medical Laboratory Technician Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical laboratory technician in Mississippi?
You become a medical laboratory technician in Mississippi by completing an accredited associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Clinical Laboratory Technology, then obtaining licensure through the Mississippi State Board of Health, which requires passing a nationally recognized exam such as the ASCP MLT certification. Mississippi requires an active state license before you can work independently in a clinical lab, so completing the licensure application alongside or immediately after your exam is the standard path.
Which companies hire medical laboratory technicians in Mississippi?
Mississippi medical laboratory technician roles are posted by Baptist Memorial Health Care, University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Singing River Health System and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Mississippi's larger hospital systems and regional reference laboratories tend to post the most consistently, especially in the Jackson metro and along the Gulf Coast.
Which Mississippi cities have the most medical laboratory technician jobs?
Jackson, Gulfport, and Ocean Springs account for the most medical laboratory technician openings in Mississippi. Jackson leads because it is home to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and several large Merit Health campuses, while Gulfport and Hattiesburg are driven by Singing River Health System and Forrest General Hospital, which are major regional employers anchoring laboratory hiring across southern Mississippi.
Are there remote medical laboratory technician jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, but they're rare. Most medical laboratory technician work requires hands-on specimen handling, instrument operation, and on-site quality control that cannot be performed remotely. About 0% of medical laboratory technician openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions are typically limited to laboratory informatics, data review, or telehealth support functions rather than traditional bench work.
How can I get hired as a medical laboratory technician in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to the University of Mississippi Medical Center or regional hospital systems like Forrest General or Singing River Health System, which regularly bring on new graduates from accredited MLT programs for structured orientation and competency training. Candidates who have completed an externship at a Mississippi clinical site during their associate program have a clear advantage. Starting in a phlebotomy or laboratory assistant role at one of these institutions is a proven way to move into an MLT position once you obtain your Mississippi license.
