Summary
Medical Technologist 2 is professional medical technology supervisory work or independent work of a comparable level in performance of diagnostic tests and procedures in a large clinical laboratory of a county hospital. A Medical Technologist II is responsible for technical supervision of a unit within a clinical laboratory division such as microbiology, hematology, chemistry or serology and urinalysis, performing the more difficult tests assigned to the unit. Related responsibilities include contact with the medical staff to discuss laboratory results and completion of demonstrations for residents or technology students. Some incumbents of the classification perform independent work of a comparable level, including completion of more difficult and complex tests with responsibility for results, re-tests where abnormal or atypical results are obtained, and assisting superiors in specialized developmental or quality control work. Emphasis of the work is on daily technical supervision of technologists and laboratory assistants engaged in completion of a volume of diagnostic tests, with assigned responsibility for accuracy of results and administrative control of standardized tests performed by manual or automatic methods within the unit. Work is performed under general supervision by a professional superior who discusses complex problems arising and evaluates work for professional quality.
Responsibilities
- Produces accurate results and outcomes according to age specific standard operating procedures.
- Matches the patient identifying information on specimens with the work document without clerical/data entry errors or omissions.
- Demonstrates the ability to coordinate simultaneous series of procedures with accuracy.
- Consults supervisor for additional assignments and follows them to completion.
- Completes patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits.
- Interprets patient and quality control samples or procedures determining whether they are abnormal or incorrect.
- Takes appropriate action according to protocol.
- Recognizes and documents efforts to resolve equipment and/or procedural problems.
- Notifies supervisor when necessary.
- Completes routine tasks without direct supervision.
- Oversees and/or performs preventive maintenance and documents corrective actions taken.
- Prioritizes workload in response to STAT requests according to protocol.
- Learns new procedures and assignments within mutually agreed upon time frame.
- Maintains an appropriate inventory of supplies, keeps working supplies stocked.
- Adapts to modifications of work assignments and, when requested, is willing to adjust personal schedule for the benefit of patient care.
- Demonstrates a concern for cleanliness of self and work area.
- Practices infection control for the protection of the patients, co-workers and self.
- Assumes ownership of issues and follows them to resolution.
- Maintains current knowledge of written revisions in procedures as well as advances in the profession.
- Offers innovative solutions to allow for efficient and effective delivery of laboratory service.
- Maintains neat, legible and organized written work documents with appropriate dates/initials.
- Organizes and performs work according to section procedure manual, ensuring that workflow can be followed by other personnel.
- Performs other duties not covered above after appropriate notification and training.
- Assists in organizing and directing workflow.
- Communicates regularly with subordinates and supervisor.
- Provides initial non-technical resources in resolving routine problems.
- Demonstrates practical decision making skills.

- Prepares and records proficiency testing or performs other specialized tasks according to protocol.
- Takes charge of the department in the absence of the supervisors.
- Assists in providing adequate staffing.
- Reviews Quality Control records monthly and takes corrective action as appropriate.
- Reviews all daily QC/PM sheets for completeness when in charge.
- Reviews all PM sheets at the end of the month and files as per department protocol.
- Ensures that linearity, instrument correlation, calibrations, and service (PM) are done as per schedule.
- Prepares monthly and weekly schedule as requested by supervisor.
- Assists technologists and other staff members with technical and non-technical questions.
- Assists in the implementation of new equipment and test methodologies for the department.
- Acts on recommendations for improvement.
- Monitors ongoing service indicators to identify and correct poor performance and service.
- Motivates staff and fosters an atmosphere of teamwork. Assists in the hiring of new employees.
- Provides initial departmental orientation and job training to confirm staff member's abilities to fulfill job expectations.
- Trains new employees using standard operating procedures.
- Verifies new employee competency after initial training, at six months and yearly thereafter.
- Maintains training and competency records up to date.
- Monitors employee performance, productivity, work patterns and adherence to age specific laboratory standard operating procedures.
- Assures documentation of unusual situations affecting laboratory operation in daily communication book and notifies supervisor.
- Prepares employee performance evaluations and submits to Assistant Clinical Manager for approval four weeks prior to due date.
- Assists supervisor with disciplinary actions as per protocol.
- Keeps minimum storage of supplies available at all times.
- Orders laboratory supplies. Performs duties in all areas of responsibility.
- Interacts with supervisors and other team members to ensure timely, quality patient care.
- Monitors pending work and ensures work is completed within established turn around times.
- Communicates shift issues with incoming supervisor or designee.
- Follows departmental policies and procedures at all times.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience
Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
Education
Associate's degree in related field is required. Bachelor's degree in related field is strongly preferred.
