Mental Health Counseling Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health counseling in Texas?
Becoming a licensed mental health counselor in Texas requires completing a master's degree in counseling or a related field, then applying to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors for a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate credential while accruing supervised clinical hours. After completing the required hours under a board-approved supervisor, you sit for the National Counselor Examination and apply to upgrade to full Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) status.
Which companies hire mental health counselings in Texas?
Employers hiring mental health counselings in Texas right now include Management & Training Corporation, Dallas Independent School District, and Houston Methodist, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas-based community mental health centers, large hospital systems, and school district employee assistance programs represent some of the most consistent sources of full-time openings across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most mental health counseling jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio have the most mental health counseling openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth generate the highest volume because of their large hospital networks, county-funded community mental health authorities, and dense populations requiring bilingual and culturally specific services, while Austin's concentration of technology employers and a growing young adult population has driven steady demand for outpatient and workplace-based counseling roles.
Are there remote mental health counseling jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, since telehealth has become a standard delivery model for outpatient talk therapy. About 9% of mental health counseling openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the expansion of telehealth platforms and virtual outpatient programs. Individual therapy, coaching, and employee assistance roles are the most consistently remote, while crisis intervention, inpatient, and school-based positions typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a mental health counseling in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an LPC Associate position, which is the supervised credential Texas requires before full licensure and is explicitly designed for clinicians building their hours. Community mental health centers such as Metrocare Services in Dallas and Integral Care in Austin routinely hire LPC Associates and provide board-approved supervision as part of employment. Adjacent roles like case manager, behavioral health technician, or crisis line counselor at these same organizations offer another door in, building documented clinical exposure that strengthens a future counseling application.
Where can I find and apply to mental health counseling jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mental health counseling jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers actively hiring. Search the listings, find roles that fit your license level, specialty, and preferred location, and apply directly without creating a profile or signing up.
