Operations Jobs in Norfolk: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a operations job in Norfolk?
Focus your search on the sectors that drive Norfolk's operations market: defense and government contracting near Naval Station Norfolk, port and freight logistics tied to the Port of Virginia, and healthcare systems across the medical district. Candidates who know supply chain coordination, vendor management, or facilities operations have a clear edge here. Tailoring your experience to one of these sectors, rather than applying generically, gets the most traction in this market.
Which companies hire operationss in Norfolk?
Norfolk operations roles are posted by Sentara, City of Norfolk, VA, and Devrem and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The local employer base skews heavily toward defense contractors, port and maritime logistics firms, and regional health systems, all of which run large operations teams year-round.
Are there remote operations jobs in Norfolk?
Yes, though it depends heavily on the type of role. Hands-on operations work tied to port facilities, warehouses, or military installations is almost entirely on-site, while analytics, procurement coordination, and vendor operations roles are more often remote-eligible. About 20% of operations openings tied to Norfolk are remote or hybrid as of July 2026. The most remote-friendly specialties locally tend to be procurement and operations analyst positions at defense contractors and healthcare organizations.
How can I get a operations job in Norfolk with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in Norfolk is through logistics coordinator or operations assistant roles at port-adjacent freight companies and third-party logistics providers near the Port of Virginia. Defense contractors also hire operations support staff with entry-level backgrounds, particularly for administrative and scheduling functions on government contracts. Earning an associate degree or a supply chain certificate from Tidewater Community College strengthens your profile noticeably in this market. Familiarity with military operations culture is a distinct advantage for many of the larger Norfolk employers.
Which industries hire the most operationss in Norfolk?
Most operations openings in Norfolk sit in Banking & Financial Services and Consulting & Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Norfolk's position as home to the world's largest naval base and one of the East Coast's busiest commercial ports makes defense contracting and maritime logistics the dominant forces behind local operations hiring, with healthcare adding a steady secondary layer of demand.
