Confirm your degree qualifies
Accounting Clerk roles typically require a bachelor's in accounting, finance, or a related business field. Verify your degree's CIP code with your DSO to confirm STEM OPT eligibility, which extends your work authorization from 12 to 36 months.
Target employers with H-1B history
Look for companies that have previously sponsored H-1B visas for accounting roles. Prior sponsorship activity is a strong signal that a company understands the process and is willing to invest in international employees beyond OPT.
Highlight software proficiency clearly
Employers hiring Accounting Clerks expect hands-on experience with QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms. Listing specific software versions or certification levels makes your resume stand out and signals you can contribute from day one.
Address your OPT timeline upfront
Be transparent about your OPT end date during early conversations. Employers appreciate candidates who know their timeline and can explain what H-1B sponsorship involves, reducing the anxiety that often causes companies to pass on international applicants.
Focus on mid-size companies in accounting-heavy industries
Mid-size firms in healthcare, manufacturing, and real estate consistently hire Accounting Clerks and tend to be more flexible on sponsorship than large enterprises. They often have smaller, more approachable HR teams that can make faster hiring decisions.
Get your accounting credentials in order
Even without a CPA, completing coursework toward certification or passing individual CPA exam sections signals commitment to the profession. Some employers view progress toward licensure as a reason to invest in sponsorship rather than hiring a domestic candidate.
Accounting Clerk OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Accounting Clerk role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Accounting Clerk positions generally qualify when the employer requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field as a minimum condition of the job. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field face more scrutiny. When reviewing postings on Migrate Mate, look for listings that specify a relevant degree requirement, since that language directly supports a future H-1B petition.
Can I use STEM OPT extension as an Accounting Clerk?
Yes, if your degree is in accounting, finance, management information systems, or another qualifying STEM-designated field. Accounting degrees classified under CIP code 52.0301 are STEM-eligible, which extends your OPT authorization to 36 months total. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility, since not all business degrees qualify.
What should I do if an Accounting Clerk job posting says 'no visa sponsorship'?
That language usually refers to H-1B sponsorship, not OPT. You are authorized to work on OPT without employer sponsorship, so you can apply and clarify your status during the interview. Explain that your current OPT work authorization requires no employer action, and discuss future sponsorship needs honestly once there is mutual interest in moving forward.
How do I find Accounting Clerk jobs where employers are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to visa sponsorship and OPT candidates, which saves significant time compared to filtering generic postings manually. Accounting roles on the platform are tagged by sponsorship willingness, so you can focus your applications on companies already familiar with hiring international students rather than educating every employer from scratch.
What happens to my OPT status if I lose my Accounting Clerk job?
You have a cumulative 90-day unemployment limit during standard OPT, which resets to 150 days if you are on a STEM OPT extension. The clock starts from your program end date, not your job loss date. Notify your DSO immediately if you lose employment, update your SEVIS record, and begin your job search right away to avoid exceeding the unemployment threshold.
