OPT Anesthesiologist Jobs
Anesthesiologist roles on OPT are rare but attainable. Most positions require USMLE completion and a residency match, which means your OPT timeline matters. STEM OPT extension is not available for this role. Plan your authorization window carefully around residency program start dates.

Time your OPT activation around the residency match
Residency programs start on July 1 each year. Activate your OPT so it covers that date. Applying before you have an active EAD creates complications. Coordinate with your DSO months in advance to align your authorization window.
Understand that residency programs are your primary path
Attending anesthesiologist positions require board certification, which requires completing residency first. As an OPT student, your realistic target is an accredited anesthesiology residency program, not an attending role. Focus your applications accordingly.
Confirm your medical degree is ECFMG-certified before applying
ECFMG certification validates your foreign medical credential for U.S. graduate medical education. Programs will not consider applications without it. Start the certification process early, as it can take several months to complete.
Use your OPT period strategically if USMLE scores need improvement
If your Step scores are below competitive thresholds, use early OPT employment in a research or clinical support role to strengthen your application. Anesthesiology is one of the most competitive specialties, so a gap year strategy can pay off.
Document every clinical hour and research contribution for your ERAS application
Anesthesiology residency programs scrutinize clinical experience closely. Keep detailed records of your rotations, procedures observed, and any U.S. clinical experience. Strong documentation distinguishes international medical graduates in a competitive applicant pool.
Anesthesiologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an anesthesiologist on OPT?
Not as an attending physician. OPT authorizes employment in your field of study, but practicing as an anesthesiologist requires completing a U.S. residency and board certification first. On OPT, you can work in a research, clinical support, or residency capacity. Attending-level practice requires separate work authorization obtained after completing training.
Is anesthesiology eligible for the STEM OPT extension?
No. Anesthesiology is a medical specialty, not a STEM-designated field of study. F-1 students with anesthesiology or general medicine degrees are not eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Your standard OPT period is 12 months. Planning your residency match timeline around this window is critical.
How do I find anesthesiology residency programs that sponsor international medical graduates on OPT?
Migrate Mate lists employer and program sponsorship details so you can filter for positions open to OPT students. Beyond that, ERAS application data and program-specific FAQs typically disclose whether a program accepts IMGs and which visa types they sponsor. Contact program coordinators directly to confirm OPT acceptability before submitting.
What visa do most anesthesiology residency programs sponsor after OPT ends?
The majority of residency programs sponsor J-1 visas through the ECFMG, not H-1B visas. The J-1 exchange visitor visa carries a two-year home country physical presence requirement after training ends, which has long-term immigration implications. A smaller number of programs offer H-1B sponsorship. Ask each program directly before ranking them.
Can I start an anesthesiology residency while on OPT instead of switching to a J-1 or H-1B?
Yes, if your OPT is active and the program accepts it. Residency is qualifying employment for OPT purposes because it directly relates to your field of study. You would need to transition to a different visa status, typically J-1 or H-1B, before your OPT expires to continue the program without interruption.
