Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an Assistant General Manager
Target multi-unit operators and franchises
Large franchise groups and multi-location operators hire Assistant General Managers at scale and have established HR and legal infrastructure to support H-1B visa sponsorship. Smaller independent operators rarely have the resources or experience to sponsor work visas.
Understand your OPT timeline before applying
Standard OPT gives you 12 months of work authorization. Most Assistant General Manager roles are not in STEM-designated fields, so plan around the H-1B lottery deadline in March, which falls roughly nine months into your OPT period.
Lead with operational results in your resume
Quantify your management impact: revenue growth, cost reduction, staff retention rates, and guest satisfaction scores. Hiring managers in operations roles prioritize measurable outcomes, and concrete numbers make sponsorship conversations easier to justify to HR and leadership.
Raise sponsorship early in the process
Bring up your OPT status and sponsorship needs before final-round interviews, not after an offer. This filters out employers who cannot sponsor and saves time, while showing the employers who can that you are organized and transparent about your situation.
Pursue hospitality management programs at major hotel brands
Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and similar global brands have structured management tracks and legal teams familiar with visa sponsorship. Their AGM pipeline programs are designed for long-term retention, which increases the likelihood they will support your immigration needs.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsorship-friendly employers
Not every company that lists an Assistant General Manager role is open to visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters for employers with a verified history of sponsoring OPT and H-1B workers, saving you from applying to companies that will not move forward.
Assistant General Manager OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an Assistant General Manager on OPT?
Yes, F-1 students with approved OPT can work as an Assistant General Manager in any industry where the role aligns with their field of study. OPT requires that your employment be directly related to your degree. A business, hospitality, or management degree typically satisfies this requirement for AGM positions.
Do Assistant General Manager jobs typically lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Some do, but it depends heavily on employer size and structure. Large hotel chains, restaurant groups, and retail corporations with dedicated HR teams are more likely to sponsor H-1B petitions than independent operators. The AGM role qualifies as a specialty occupation when a bachelor's degree in a specific field is genuinely required, which is what USCIS evaluates.
Is Assistant General Manager a STEM OPT eligible role?
In most cases, no. General management and hospitality administration are not classified under STEM-designated fields, so a 24-month STEM OPT extension is generally not available for this role. If your degree is in a STEM field and the AGM role involves significant data, systems, or engineering components, consult your DSO to assess whether STEM OPT might apply.
How do I find Assistant General Manager jobs that sponsor OPT students?
The most efficient approach is to use Migrate Mate, which surfaces AGM roles at employers with a documented history of sponsoring OPT and H-1B workers. This avoids the common problem of progressing through multiple interview rounds only to learn that the employer does not support visa sponsorship.
What happens if my OPT expires before my employer files an H-1B petition?
If your employer submits an H-1B petition by April 1 and USCIS receives it before your OPT expires, you may be eligible for a cap-gap extension that bridges your status through September 30. Your DSO must issue an updated I-20 reflecting the cap-gap, and you cannot work beyond the cap-gap period if you are not selected in the lottery.
