Confirm your OPT dates before applying
Employers in commercial driving often hire on short timelines. Have your EAD card in hand and know your exact authorization end date before applying so you can answer employer questions about your work eligibility confidently and without delay.
Get your CDL before your OPT starts if possible
Most fuel truck positions require a Class A or Class B CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement. Obtaining your CDL before OPT begins means employers see a fully work-authorized, licensed candidate rather than someone still clearing licensing requirements on their clock.
Target companies with established fleet operations
Large fuel distributors, logistics carriers, and petroleum companies with dedicated HR teams are more familiar with EAD-based employment than small owner-operators. Bigger fleets have compliance staff who understand work authorization documentation and are less likely to reject you out of unfamiliarity.
Be upfront about STEM OPT extension eligibility
If your degree qualifies for STEM OPT, mention the 24-month extension early. Employers hesitant about a short authorization window are more likely to invest in onboarding and training when they know you can legally work for up to three years total.
Emphasize your hazmat endorsement in your application
Fuel transport requires TSA-cleared hazardous materials endorsements, which take time and background checks to obtain. Candidates who already hold this endorsement are immediately more valuable to employers and stand out in a pool of applicants who still need to complete the process.
Prepare documentation that matches your EAD exactly
Commercial driving employers run formal I-9 and DOT background checks. Make sure every document you submit, including your EAD, passport, and student visa, is current and consistent. Discrepancies in dates or name formatting can slow hiring significantly or trigger compliance flags.
Fuel Truck Driver OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students legally work as fuel truck drivers in the United States?
Yes, F-1 OPT students can work as fuel truck drivers as long as the role is directly related to their field of study and they hold a valid EAD. Transportation, logistics, and engineering degree holders most commonly qualify. You'll also need a valid CDL with the appropriate endorsements, which is a separate requirement from your OPT authorization.
Does a fuel truck driver job qualify as being related to my degree for OPT purposes?
It depends on your degree field. Transportation management, logistics, supply chain, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering degrees can support a direct connection to fuel truck operations. The key is being able to articulate how the role uses knowledge from your program. Your Designated School Official can help you assess whether the connection is defensible before you accept an offer.
Where can I find fuel truck driver jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is designed specifically for F-1 OPT and visa-sponsored job seekers, making it the most efficient place to find fuel truck driver roles where employers are already open to work-authorized candidates. Filtering by OPT eligibility saves significant time compared to applying broadly and being screened out during employer background checks.
Do fuel truck driver employers typically understand EAD-based work authorization?
Larger fuel distribution companies and national logistics carriers with dedicated HR and compliance teams generally handle EAD employment routinely. Smaller operators and regional independents are less likely to have experience with it and may decline simply due to unfamiliarity rather than legal restriction. Targeting companies with established fleet operations of 50 or more vehicles significantly improves your odds.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my fuel truck driver job ends before my EAD expires?
You enter a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment. During that window you must find a new OPT-qualifying job, change your visa status, or prepare to leave the United States. Commercial driving positions can end abruptly due to contract changes or seasonal demand, so maintaining awareness of your authorization timeline is especially important in this field.
