Lead with your degree field, not just your title
Employers assess OPT eligibility by whether your degree connects to the role. Frame your application around your engineering or construction management degree. A clear degree-to-role connection makes the specialty occupation case straightforward for HR and legal teams.
Target employers with active H-1B filing history
Companies that have sponsored H-1B visa workers before are far more likely to sponsor you after OPT. Search OFLC disclosure data to identify firms that have filed for project manager roles. These employers already have immigration counsel and an established process.
Confirm STEM extension eligibility before you apply
Civil, mechanical, and industrial engineering degrees typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirming eligibility before interviews lets you tell employers you have up to three years of work authorization, which significantly reduces their urgency around H-1B timing.
Bring PMP or PMI credentials to the conversation
Professional certifications like PMP signal commitment to the field and strengthen the specialty occupation argument. Employers and immigration attorneys use credentials alongside degree requirements to support H-1B petitions. Starting your certification process during OPT is a practical step worth taking early.
Address work authorization proactively, not defensively
Bring up your OPT status and timeline before the offer stage. Employers dislike surprises. A brief, confident explanation, covering your current EAD, your OPT end date, and your STEM extension eligibility, removes ambiguity and positions you as someone who understands the process.
Focus on mid-size construction and infrastructure firms
Mid-size commercial contractors and engineering consultancies often have consistent project pipelines and stronger per-hire incentives than large enterprises. They hire fewer project managers annually, so each hire matters more, making them more willing to invest in sponsorship for the right candidate.
Commercial Project Manager OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Commercial Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Commercial Project Manager roles generally qualify as specialty occupations when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. The key is that the employer's job description must require a degree in a relevant discipline, not just any bachelor's degree. Roles where any degree field is accepted are harder to support under H-1B standards.
Which degree fields support OPT authorization for Commercial Project Manager jobs?
Construction management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, and business administration are the most commonly accepted degree fields for this role. Engineering degrees also open the door to the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of total work authorization. Your EAD must list your degree and authorize employment in a related occupation.
How can I find Commercial Project Manager jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by sponsorship openness, so you're not wasting time applying to employers who won't consider work authorization. Browsing Commercial Project Manager listings on Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a history of sponsoring international workers in project management and construction roles.
Can I work as a Commercial Project Manager on STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as civil or mechanical engineering, you can apply for a 24-month extension after your initial 12-month OPT period. During the STEM extension, you must work for an E-Verify employer, and your role must remain related to your degree. Commercial project management at a construction or engineering firm typically satisfies this requirement.
What should I expect from employers during the H-1B sponsorship conversation for this role?
Most employers will want confirmation that your role qualifies as a specialty occupation before committing to sponsorship. Be prepared to explain how your degree directly applies to the position. Employers in construction and infrastructure are generally more familiar with the H-1B process than smaller firms, and many work with immigration attorneys who assess sponsorship feasibility before making offers.
