How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Corporate Recruiter
Target companies with dedicated HR or talent acquisition teams
Large enterprises and high-growth tech companies run structured recruiting functions that regularly sponsor visas. A standalone recruiter at a 10-person startup rarely has the legal infrastructure or budget to file an H-1B petition on your behalf.
Frame your degree as the foundation of the role
OPT requires your job to relate to your field of study. A human resources, psychology, or business degree maps directly to corporate recruiting. Be ready to explain that connection clearly to employers and document it in your offer letter.
Apply before your OPT start date, not after
Corporate recruiting roles often have 4-to-8-week hiring timelines including interviews and background checks. Starting your job search 3 months before graduation gives you enough runway to land an offer before your authorization window opens.
Prioritize roles with a formal H-1B sponsorship track record
Some employers sponsor in principle but rarely follow through for non-engineering roles. Search Department of Labor disclosure data to verify that a company has filed H-1B petitions for HR and recruiting job titles specifically, not just technical roles.
Use your OPT period to build measurable recruiting results
H-1B petitions require evidence of a specialty occupation. Metrics like time-to-fill, offer acceptance rates, and hires per quarter give your employer concrete material to support your petition and demonstrate the specialized nature of your work.
Ask about sponsorship directly during the offer stage
Many employers assume OPT students will self-resolve their visa situation. Raising the H-1B sponsorship question at the offer stage, not after you start, ensures both sides understand the commitment before you accept and prevents surprises at the 12-month mark.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Corporate Recruiter role qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, provided your degree is in a related field such as human resources, business administration, or psychology. OPT requires your employment to be directly related to your major. Corporate recruiting involves talent strategy, behavioral assessment, and workforce planning, which align closely with HR and business degrees. Document that connection in writing with your employer before you start.
Where can I find Corporate Recruiter jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship and work authorization type. Most general job boards don't filter by OPT eligibility, which means you spend time applying to roles that won't move forward once the employer learns you need work authorization. Migrate Mate removes that friction.
Can I work as a corporate recruiter on STEM OPT extension?
Only if your degree qualifies as a STEM field, which most HR and business degrees do not. STEM OPT is limited to degrees on the Department of Homeland Security's STEM Designated Degree Program List. A bachelor's in computer science with a recruiting role may not satisfy the STEM OPT relationship requirement. Confirm with your DSO before assuming the 24-month extension applies.
How early should I start applying for Corporate Recruiter roles before my OPT begins?
Start at least 3 months before your expected OPT start date. Corporate recruiting roles typically involve multiple interview rounds, a hiring manager screen, HR panel, and sometimes a case study or sourcing exercise. Factor in background check timelines and offer negotiation. You can apply before your EAD card arrives, but you cannot begin working until the card is in hand and your OPT start date has passed.
Will employers sponsor an H-1B for a Corporate Recruiter role?
Some do, but it's less automatic than for engineering or software roles. Recruiting is a recognized specialty occupation when tied to a specific degree, and companies in financial services, consulting, and technology have sponsored H-1B petitions for talent acquisition roles. The strongest candidates demonstrate measurable impact during their OPT period, making the business case for sponsorship straightforward when the H-1B lottery window opens in March.
