Confirm the role qualifies under your degree field
Delivery Driver positions must relate to your field of study to be valid OPT employment. Operations, logistics, and supply chain degrees often support these roles. Check with your DSO before accepting an offer to avoid jeopardizing your OPT status.
Prioritize employers with established OPT experience
Large logistics operators and regional delivery companies often have HR teams familiar with OPT documentation requirements. Smaller gig-style operators may not understand the process, which can create onboarding delays or compliance issues for your work authorization.
Track your employment start date carefully
OPT has strict unemployment day limits, currently 90 days for standard OPT. Secure your Delivery Driver offer before your program ends and confirm your start date in writing so you have documentation if your DSO or USCIS ever asks.
Understand the difference between employee and contractor status
Some delivery operators classify drivers as independent contractors, not employees. Self-employment on OPT is permitted but requires additional DSO reporting and documentation. Confirm your employment classification before signing any agreement to stay compliant.
Report employment changes to your DSO promptly
If you change employers or shift between delivery companies, report it to your DSO within ten days. Unreported employer changes are a common OPT compliance mistake that can trigger status violations, even when the new role is otherwise qualifying.
Apply early relative to your OPT start date
Delivery companies frequently run background checks and driving record reviews before onboarding, which can take two to four weeks. Starting your job search at least 60 days before your OPT authorization begins gives you enough buffer to clear those checks.
Delivery Driver OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Delivery Driver on OPT?
Yes, if the role connects to your degree field. A student with a degree in supply chain management, logistics, or operations management can typically qualify. A degree unrelated to transportation or business may not support the connection. Confirm with your DSO before accepting any offer, since invalid employment counts against your unemployment day limit.
Does gig delivery work count as valid OPT employment?
It can, but with important caveats. Gig delivery roles typically classify workers as independent contractors, which counts as self-employment under OPT rules. Self-employment is permitted, but you must report it to your DSO and document how the work relates to your degree. You also need to work at least 20 hours per week for it to count as qualifying OPT employment.
How do I find Delivery Driver jobs that are OPT-friendly?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by sponsorship and work authorization compatibility. Searching there surfaces employers who understand OPT requirements, which reduces the back-and-forth of explaining your situation to HR teams unfamiliar with F-1 work authorization during the hiring process.
What documents do I need when starting a Delivery Driver job on OPT?
You'll need your EAD card, a valid passport, your I-20 with OPT authorization noted, and your I-94 arrival record. Employers use these for I-9 verification. Some delivery companies also require a clean driving record check and a valid U.S. driver's license, so have both ready before your start date to avoid onboarding delays.
What happens to my OPT if I switch delivery employers?
Switching employers is permitted on standard OPT, but you must report the change to your DSO within ten days. The gap between jobs counts toward your 90-day unemployment limit, so minimize it where possible. Your new role still needs to connect to your degree field, and your EAD card remains valid as long as your OPT authorization period has not expired.
