English Teacher Jobs for OPT Students
English Teacher jobs on OPT are widely available in K-12 schools, language institutes, and university ESL programs. Most positions require a bachelor's degree in English, Education, or Linguistics. STEM OPT extension does not apply to this role, so your 12-month OPT window is the core timeline employers work with.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an English Teacher
Target ESL and language program employers
University ESL centers, community college language programs, and private language institutes hire OPT students more regularly than K-12 public schools. These employers are familiar with work authorization requirements and process hires faster.
Lead with your degree field in applications
English Teacher roles on OPT require a direct connection between your degree and the position. A degree in English, Education, TESOL, or Linguistics makes that link clear to employers and strengthens your OPT eligibility for the role.
Pursue TESOL or CELTA certification
Holding a recognized teaching certification like TESOL or CELTA strengthens your candidacy considerably. It signals professional readiness to employers who may be on the fence about navigating the work authorization process for an OPT hire.
Understand public school H-1B cap-exempt status
Public elementary and secondary schools connected to government institutions may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. This means they can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery, making them strategically valuable sponsors for English Teachers.

Can I work as an English Teacher on OPT?
Yes, as long as your job is directly related to your degree field. A degree in English, Education, TESOL, or Linguistics supports an English Teacher role under OPT. You must work at least 20 hours per week to maintain valid OPT status, and you cannot work before your OPT start date on your EAD card.
Do English Teacher jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
No. English Teacher positions fall under the humanities and education fields, not STEM. Your OPT authorization is limited to 12 months. If you want to continue working after OPT ends, you'll need an employer willing to sponsor a visa such as the H-1B, J-1 Exchange Visitor, or O-1.
Which visa can an employer sponsor after my OPT expires?
The most common path is H-1B sponsorship, which applies when the role requires a specialized degree. English Teachers at universities or language institutes often qualify. J-1 Exchange Visitor status is another route, particularly for teachers placed through exchange programs. Public school districts connected to government may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, which removes the lottery requirement.
How do I find English Teacher employers who are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists English Teacher jobs from employers with a demonstrated history of sponsoring international workers. Searching there lets you focus your effort on roles where OPT authorization and future visa sponsorship are realistic, rather than applying broadly and discovering late in the process that an employer won't hire on OPT.
Can I work as a substitute or part-time English Teacher on OPT?
Part-time work is allowed on OPT but you must work at least 20 hours per week to remain in valid status. Substitute teaching that averages fewer than 20 hours weekly would put your OPT at risk. If you take a part-time role, track your hours carefully and consult your Designated School Official if your schedule fluctuates significantly.
