Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Facilities Manager
Target employers with large physical footprints
Universities, hospital systems, and large manufacturers maintain dedicated facilities teams and have established HR processes for work authorization. These employers are far more likely to have sponsored visas before and understand the process.
Clarify your OPT authorization early
Facilities Manager roles often involve sensitive site access or government contracts. Bring up your OPT status before the offer stage so security clearance requirements and authorization timelines don't derail an otherwise strong candidacy at the last moment.
Emphasize your degree field's relevance
Your degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field directly supports sponsorship eligibility. Clearly connect your academic background to the job description in your resume and interviews to strengthen the specialty occupation case.
Ask about the facilities team's headcount and tenure
Larger facilities departments with long-tenured staff signal organizational stability and budget for sponsorship. A team of one is a warning sign. A team of ten with low turnover suggests an employer who invests in retaining facilities professionals long-term.
Get familiar with relevant certifications
Credentials like CFM (Certified Facility Manager) or FMP (Facility Management Professional) from IFMA signal professional commitment and strengthen H-1B visa specialty occupation arguments. Starting the process during OPT demonstrates intent to stay and grow in the field.
Negotiate your start date around OPT timelines
Your EAD card must arrive and your OPT start date must be active before your first day of work. Build at least three to four weeks of buffer between an accepted offer and your proposed start date to avoid authorization gaps.
Facilities Manager OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Facilities Manager on OPT?
Yes. Facilities Manager roles qualify for OPT work authorization as long as the position is directly related to your degree field, such as engineering, construction management, or facilities management. Your employer does not need to file any paperwork with USCIS during your OPT period. You just need a valid EAD card before your start date.
Do Facilities Manager jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Some do, but it depends on your degree and the employer. If your degree is in a STEM field like civil engineering or mechanical engineering, and your employer is enrolled in E-Verify, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Facilities roles tied to operations or business management degrees typically do not qualify, so confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO.
How do I find Facilities Manager employers that sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles open to OPT and visa sponsorship, which saves significant time compared to applying broadly. Look for employers in healthcare, higher education, and large corporate real estate, as these sectors have the most consistent track record of sponsoring facilities professionals for H-1B status after OPT.
Is Facilities Manager considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can be, but the argument requires careful framing. USCIS looks for roles that normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. A Facilities Manager position tied to engineering systems, building technology, or technical operations is more defensible than a general property management role. The job description and employer documentation matter significantly when USCIS evaluates the petition.
What happens if my OPT expires before my employer files an H-1B?
If you have a pending or approved H-1B with an October 1 start date and your OPT expires before then, the cap-gap provision automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. You must have had valid OPT status when the H-1B was filed. Talk to your DSO as soon as your employer confirms they will sponsor you to map out the exact timeline.
