Confirm your role qualifies for STEM OPT
Facility Technician positions often fall under engineering technology CIP codes, but your DSO must verify the match before you apply for a 24-month STEM extension. Confirm the alignment early so your timeline stays on track.
Target employers with existing E-Verify enrollment
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before accepting an offer, ask HR directly whether the company is enrolled. Most large facilities management firms and manufacturers already are.
Highlight technical certifications on your resume
Certifications like OSHA 10, HVAC fundamentals, or electrical safety training signal job readiness to facilities hiring managers. These credentials reduce employer hesitation around OPT authorization timelines and training investment.
Frame your degree connection clearly in applications
OPT requires your job to be directly related to your degree. In your cover letter, explicitly connect your engineering or technology coursework to the technical responsibilities of the Facility Technician role you are applying for.
Apply well before your OPT end date
Hiring and onboarding for facilities roles can take four to eight weeks. Submit applications at least three months before your current OPT expires to leave room for offer delays, background checks, and EAD processing timelines.
Be upfront about your authorization window during screening
Facilities employers often prioritize long-term hires. Explaining your STEM OPT extension eligibility upfront, including the potential 36-month window, helps hiring managers see you as a viable long-term candidate rather than a short-term risk.
Facility Technician OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facility Technician job qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree and how the role is classified. If your degree is in engineering technology, mechanical engineering, or a related STEM field, and the Facility Technician role directly applies those skills, it will typically qualify. Your DSO compares your CIP code to the job duties to make the determination. Roles involving HVAC, electrical systems, or building automation are the strongest candidates.
What does OPT work authorization look like for a Facility Technician position?
On post-completion OPT, you can work full time as a Facility Technician as long as the job is directly related to your degree field. Your EAD card is the document that authorizes employment, and you must present it to your employer before your start date. If you qualify for STEM OPT, you can extend that authorization for an additional 24 months, giving you up to 36 months total.
How do I find Facility Technician employers who are open to hiring OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Facility Technician jobs from employers who are open to sponsoring or working with international students on OPT. Filtering by OPT-friendly employers saves you from applying to companies that will screen you out at the authorization question. Many large facilities management firms and industrial manufacturers regularly hire F-1 OPT candidates for these roles.
Can I work for a facilities contractor or third-party vendor on OPT?
Yes, but the employer of record must be the entity that signs your training plan and is enrolled in E-Verify if you plan to use a STEM OPT extension. If a staffing agency places you at a client site, your DSO needs to confirm whether the agency or the end client is considered your employer for OPT reporting purposes. This distinction matters for your I-983 training plan if you pursue STEM OPT.
What happens to my OPT status if a Facility Technician contract ends early?
If your employment ends before your OPT expires, you have a 90-day unemployment allowance under standard OPT. On STEM OPT, the allowance is 150 days total across your extension period. You must report the job separation to your DSO promptly and begin searching for a new qualifying position. Short-term contract gaps are common in facilities work, so understanding this buffer is important for staying in status.
