How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a People Operations Manager
Lead with your HR tech stack
Hiring managers want People Ops candidates who can hit the ground running. Highlight hands-on experience with HRIS platforms, ATS tools, and payroll systems in your resume, it signals operational readiness and reduces onboarding friction for OPT hires.
Target companies with established HR infrastructure
Mid-size to large employers with a dedicated HR or People team are far more likely to have OPT sponsorship experience. Startups with no HR department often lack the infrastructure to navigate work authorization paperwork alongside daily operations.
Emphasize cross-functional project experience
People Operations sits at the intersection of HR, legal, and business strategy. Highlighting cross-functional initiatives, onboarding redesigns, compliance rollouts, or culture programs, demonstrates the scope employers expect at the manager level and strengthens your candidacy.
Get SHRM-CP or PHR certified if you haven't
Certifications signal professional credibility and commitment to the field. For OPT students, they also help compensate for the perception that international candidates may leave after authorization expires, a tangible credential signals long-term investment in an HR career.
Research employers' prior OPT and H-1B history
Companies that have previously sponsored H-1B visas for HR roles are significantly more likely to support your OPT-to-H-1B transition. Reviewing public OFLC disclosure data can help you prioritize outreach toward employers already comfortable with the process.

Do People Operations Manager roles qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes. People Operations Manager is generally considered a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in human resources, business administration, organizational psychology, or a related field. As long as your degree field aligns with the role's responsibilities, the position qualifies for both standard OPT and STEM OPT extension if your degree is STEM-designated.
Can I get a STEM OPT extension as a People Operations Manager?
It depends on your degree. If you graduated with a STEM-designated degree, such as industrial-organizational psychology, management information systems, or certain business analytics programs, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. A traditional HR or general business degree is typically not STEM-designated, so confirm your program's classification with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
Where is the best place to find People Operations Manager jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT and international students looking for visa-friendly roles. Rather than sorting through thousands of listings with no sponsorship clarity, Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have a demonstrated history of hiring international candidates, making it easier to find People Operations roles where your work authorization status won't disqualify you.
What should I do if a People Operations Manager job posting says 'must be authorized to work in the U.S.'?
OPT grants you valid work authorization, so you do meet that requirement. You're not required to disclose visa type during the application stage. However, if the posting explicitly states 'no visa sponsorship,' that means the employer won't support an H-1B petition after your OPT expires, you'd need to decide whether the role is worth pursuing given the long-term limitation.
How does the 90-day unemployment limit affect People Operations Manager job searches on OPT?
USCIS requires OPT students to avoid accumulating more than 90 days of unemployment during their OPT period (150 days if on STEM extension). If your People Operations job search is taking longer than expected, prioritize applications early and consider part-time or contract HR roles that qualify under your authorized field, they count as valid employment and stop the unemployment clock while you continue your full-time search.
