OPT Sourcing Jobs
Sourcing roles sit at the intersection of supply chain, procurement, and vendor management, making them a strong fit for F-1 OPT students with business, engineering, or operations degrees. Most positions qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B visa sponsorship, and STEM OPT extensions apply when the role is housed within a STEM-designated program.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Sourcing
Target companies with active procurement functions
Large manufacturers, retailers, and tech firms run dedicated sourcing teams and sponsor visas regularly. Focus your search on employers with established supply chain departments, where sourcing is a core function rather than an ad hoc responsibility.
Clarify your STEM OPT eligibility early
If your degree is in supply chain management, industrial engineering, or operations research, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before interviewing so you can answer sponsorship timeline questions confidently.
Frame your role as a specialty occupation
Sourcing roles require analytical judgment, supplier negotiation, and market knowledge tied to a specific field of study. Emphasize degree requirements in your job descriptions and offer letters, since that connection is central to H-1B visa eligibility.
Engage procurement-heavy industries first
Automotive, semiconductor, consumer goods, and aerospace companies have complex supply chains that demand dedicated sourcing professionals. These industries file H-1B petitions frequently and are more familiar with sponsoring international candidates in operations roles.
Document your sourcing skills with measurable outcomes
Cost savings achieved, supplier onboarding timelines reduced, or contract terms improved all demonstrate specialized value. Quantified results make it easier for employers to justify sponsorship and for immigration attorneys to build a strong H-1B petition.
Ask about sponsorship policy before accepting an offer
Some employers sponsor only certain role levels or require a minimum tenure before filing. Confirm the company's H-1B policy during the offer stage, not after, so you can plan around your OPT expiration and avoid gaps in work authorization.
Sourcing OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do sourcing jobs qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If your degree is in supply chain management, industrial engineering, operations research, or a related STEM field, and your employer meets E-Verify requirements, you likely qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
How do I find sourcing employers that sponsor OPT and H-1B?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters sourcing jobs by sponsorship history, making it easier to identify employers who have sponsored international candidates before. Searching there saves time compared to manually screening job postings that rarely disclose sponsorship policies upfront.
Can I work in sourcing on OPT if my degree is in business administration?
Yes. Business administration degrees are broadly accepted for sourcing roles because the work involves procurement analysis, vendor evaluation, and contract management, all of which align with a business curriculum. Your I-20 must reflect your graduation date accurately, and you must apply for OPT through your DSO before your degree program ends.
What happens to my OPT authorization if I switch from a sourcing role to a different function within the same company?
OPT requires that your employment be directly related to your degree program. Moving into a role outside that scope, such as a general administrative position, could jeopardize your OPT status. If you're considering an internal transfer, discuss the change with your DSO before accepting to confirm the new role still qualifies.
Are contract or temporary sourcing positions allowed under OPT?
Yes, but the work must still be directly related to your field of study and meet the minimum hours requirement, which is at least 20 hours per week. Short-term contracts and project-based roles are permitted. Keep documentation of your work authorization and role responsibilities in case USCIS or your DSO requests verification.
