How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Group Product Manager
Target companies with a history of H-1B sponsorship
Look for employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for product roles before. Companies already familiar with the process move faster and are less likely to drop candidates over visa concerns late in the hiring process.
Lead with your STEM OPT extension eligibility
If your degree is in computer science, engineering, or a related STEM field, you may qualify for a 24-month extension. Telling hiring managers early removes uncertainty and gives employers a longer runway before H-1B sponsorship is required.
Quantify your product impact before outreach
GPM roles are evaluated on cross-functional leadership and measurable outcomes. Prepare examples showing revenue impact, team scope, or product adoption metrics before applying so you stand out against candidates who don't need sponsorship.
Ask about sponsorship policy before the final round
Raise the visa question after an initial positive signal, not at the very end. Asking earlier filters out employers who won't sponsor and saves time for both sides during what is already a long product interview process.
Focus on mid-to-large tech and enterprise companies
Smaller startups often lack the legal infrastructure to sponsor visas confidently. Mid-size and enterprise companies in tech, fintech, and healthcare have established immigration programs and dedicated HR teams equipped to handle OPT and H-1B paperwork.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Group Product Manager on OPT?
Yes. OPT authorizes F-1 students to work in roles directly related to their field of study, and Group Product Manager positions qualify under business, computer science, or engineering degrees. Your employment must remain connected to your degree field, and your EAD card must be valid before your start date.
Do Group Product Manager roles commonly come with H-1B sponsorship?
Many do, particularly at mid-size and large technology companies. Product management is consistently among the top roles sponsored on H-1B petitions. That said, sponsorship is never guaranteed and varies by employer. Using Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for GPM jobs at companies that actively sponsor OPT and H-1B candidates.
Does a Group Product Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If your bachelor's or master's degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information systems, or engineering, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. The role itself does not determine eligibility. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before applying.
How should I handle the visa question during a GPM interview process?
Raise it after you've received a positive signal, typically after a take-home or first technical screen. Frame it factually: state your OPT expiration, whether you qualify for a STEM extension, and the H-1B timeline. Most experienced hiring managers at sponsoring companies have handled this before and appreciate directness over ambiguity late in the process.
What happens to my OPT status if I'm promoted from Product Manager to Group Product Manager?
An internal promotion doesn't affect your OPT authorization as long as the new role still relates to your degree field and you remain with the same employer. You don't need a new EAD for a title change. However, if the promotion comes with a change of employer, you must report the update to your DSO within 10 days.
