Information Security Officer Jobs for OPT Students
Information Security Officer jobs on OPT require STEM-designated roles to qualify for the 24-month OPT extension, and most positions in risk management, compliance, and threat analysis meet that threshold. Employers typically sponsor H-1B after OPT, making early timing critical for your immigration timeline.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Information Security Officer
Target STEM-eligible job titles
Information Security Officer roles tied to computer science, cybersecurity, or information systems degree programs qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before applying to maximize your authorized work window.
Frame your security credentials strategically
Certifications like CISSP, Security+, or CEH signal readiness to employers skeptical of sponsoring early-career candidates. Credentials reduce perceived risk and strengthen the case that your role qualifies as a specialty occupation for visa purposes.
Highlight compliance and regulatory knowledge
Employers in finance, healthcare, and defense prioritize candidates who understand NIST, SOC 2, HIPAA, or FedRAMP frameworks. Demonstrating domain-specific compliance knowledge positions you as harder to replace, which strengthens the employer's incentive to sponsor.
Understand your STEM OPT reporting requirements
On STEM OPT extension, you must complete a formal training plan with your employer and report your employment status every six months to your DSO. Missing a reporting deadline can jeopardize your authorization, so build reminders into your calendar.
Prioritize employers with prior sponsorship history
Companies that have sponsored information security roles before understand the process and are less likely to withdraw offers due to immigration concerns. Ask HR directly or research prior sponsorship activity before investing heavily in a company's interview process.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Information Security Officer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most Information Security Officer positions qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your underlying degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, cybersecurity, information systems, or a related discipline. The job itself must also involve work directly related to that degree. Confirm eligibility with your DSO before accepting an offer.
How do I find Information Security Officer jobs that sponsor OPT?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to OPT and visa sponsorship, which saves significant time compared to screening general postings. Information security roles at financial institutions, defense contractors, healthcare systems, and large technology companies tend to have the most established sponsorship processes for F-1 candidates.
Can I work as an Information Security Officer on Day 1 OPT before my STEM extension is approved?
Yes. If you have an approved EAD for standard post-completion OPT, you can begin working immediately. Your employer does not need to wait for STEM extension approval. However, you should file your STEM OPT extension application no later than 90 days before your current OPT expires to avoid any gap in authorization.
What visa typically comes after OPT for Information Security Officers?
The H-1B is the most common pathway. Information Security Officer roles generally meet the specialty occupation requirement because the position routinely requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Your employer must file the H-1B petition before your OPT expires, which means starting that process well before the March registration window.
Do I need to report my Information Security Officer job to my DSO while on STEM OPT?
Yes. On STEM OPT extension, you must report your employment status to your DSO every six months and maintain a signed training plan with your employer. Your employer also needs to be enrolled in E-Verify. Failing to meet these requirements can result in termination of your STEM OPT authorization, so treat reporting deadlines as mandatory.
