INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1977 as the Senior Care Action Network, SCAN began with a simple but radical idea: that older adults deserve to stay healthy and independent. That belief was championed by a group of community activists we still honor today as the “12 Angry Seniors.” Their mission continues to guide everything we do.
Today, SCAN is a nonprofit health organization serving more than 500,000 people across Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington, with over $8 billion in annual revenue. With nearly five decades of experience, we have built a distinctive, values-driven platform dedicated to improving care for older adults.
Our work spans Medicare Advantage, fully integrated care models, primary care, care for the most medically and socially complex populations, and next-generation care delivery models. Across all of this, we are united by a shared commitment: combining compassion with discipline, innovation with stewardship, and growth with integrity.
At SCAN, we believe scale should strengthen—not dilute—our mission. We are building the future of care for older adults, grounded in purpose, accountability, and respect for the people and communities we serve.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Insurance Sales Representative
Target W-2 positions, not 1099 contracts
OPT requires a formal employer-employee relationship. Most insurance sales roles offer both structures, but only W-2 positions satisfy USCIS work authorization requirements. Confirm the employment type before investing time in the interview process.
Verify your OPT end date against licensing timelines
State insurance licenses take four to eight weeks to obtain. If your OPT ends soon, start the licensing process immediately after receiving a job offer. An expired EAD makes you ineligible to work even if licensed.
Ask employers about H-1B sponsorship during the offer stage
Large insurers like State Farm, Allstate, and New York Life have sponsored H-1B visa petitions before. Raise sponsorship directly during offer negotiations rather than waiting until your OPT nears expiration. Silence on timing rarely helps.
Understand how commission income affects your OPT record
SEVIS requires you to report your employer, not your income structure. Commission-based pay is fine, but your DSO must log a valid employer of record. Confirm your agency or carrier counts as your official employer.
Use your degree field to frame your application
Finance, business, economics, and mathematics degrees connect clearly to insurance sales. Framing your coursework around risk, financial planning, or statistics helps employers see the academic relevance and strengthens your case for future visa sponsorship.
Track your 90-day unemployment limit carefully
OPT students lose status after 90 days of unemployment. If you are between roles or waiting for licensing approval, that clock is running. Line up your next position before your current authorization or employment ends.
Insurance Sales Representative OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students work as Insurance Sales Representatives?
Yes, as long as the role is a W-2 position with a qualifying employer and your EAD is valid. Insurance sales roles at carriers like State Farm, Allstate, or regional brokerages typically meet OPT employment requirements. Independent contractor or 1099 arrangements do not satisfy USCIS work authorization rules. You can browse open roles on Migrate Mate.
Does an Insurance Sales Representative job qualify for STEM OPT extension?
Rarely. Insurance sales roles are typically classified under business or finance occupational codes, not STEM-designated fields. If your degree is in actuarial science, data analytics, or a STEM-designated program, and the role has substantial quantitative responsibilities, there may be a case to discuss with your DSO. Most standard sales positions will not qualify.
Do Insurance Sales Representatives need a state license, and how does that interact with OPT?
Yes. Every state requires a property and casualty or life and health insurance license before you can sell policies. Licensing involves an exam and background check, taking four to eight weeks. Your EAD must be valid before you begin working, even if the employer sponsors your license fees. Plan the timing carefully if your OPT window is short.
Do insurance companies sponsor H-1B visas for sales roles?
Some do, particularly larger carriers and financial services firms. H-1B sponsorship for sales roles is less common than in engineering or technology, but it does happen. The strongest candidates have a directly relevant degree, strong performance records, and raise the sponsorship conversation early. Researching employer H-1B filing history before applying helps set realistic expectations.
Can commission-only insurance sales jobs satisfy OPT employment requirements?
It depends on the employment structure. Commission-based pay is acceptable under OPT rules, but only if you have a formal employer of record filing taxes on your behalf through a W-2. Fully independent contractor arrangements, where you receive a 1099 and are responsible for self-employment taxes, do not meet USCIS requirements for authorized OPT employment.
