How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Mammography Technologist
Confirm your ARRT certification is current before applying
Most mammography positions require active ARRT certification in radiography or mammography. Verify your credentials are in good standing before submitting applications, as expired or pending certifications will disqualify you from most hospital and imaging center roles during OPT.
Target hospitals and large imaging networks over solo practices
Large health systems like academic medical centers and regional hospital networks have established HR and immigration processes. Smaller independent practices rarely have experience sponsoring work visas, making OPT employment authorization harder to navigate and H-1B transition much less likely.
Address your OPT authorization proactively in your cover letter
Radiology hiring managers often have limited immigration familiarity. Briefly stating your current OPT authorization period and mentioning H-1B eligibility removes ambiguity early. Employers who understand your timeline upfront are far less likely to drop you late in the hiring process.
Identify your STEM OPT eligibility before your standard OPT expires
Radiologic technology and medical imaging degrees from STEM-designated programs may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO well before your initial 12-month OPT period ends to avoid any gap in work authorization.
Apply to positions listed as H-1B sponsorship available
Some mammography and radiology employers explicitly advertise H-1B sponsorship willingness. Filtering for these roles on Migrate Mate saves significant time and ensures you're pursuing employers already familiar with OPT-to-H-1B transitions, rather than educating reluctant hiring managers from scratch.
Pursue state licensure in every state where you may work
Many states require separate radiologic technologist licensure beyond ARRT certification. Holding licensure in multiple states increases your eligible employer pool considerably, which directly improves your odds of finding an OPT-compatible position willing to support future visa sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Mammography Technologist on OPT?
Yes, if your OPT is authorized and your degree is in radiologic technology, medical imaging, or a related field. Your employment must be directly related to your field of study, which mammography technologist roles satisfy given their clinical imaging foundation. Confirm the match with your DSO before accepting any offer to protect your F-1 status.
Do Mammography Technologist employers typically sponsor H-1B visas?
Large hospital systems and regional imaging networks are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. Smaller outpatient clinics and private practices rarely sponsor. When searching on Migrate Mate, look for employers who have an established immigration history, as these organizations already have legal counsel and internal processes to support the H-1B petition on your behalf.
Does a radiologic technology degree qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your program's designated CIP code. Some radiologic technology and medical imaging programs are classified under STEM-eligible codes, while others are not. Check with your DSO or international student office to confirm your specific program's designation. If eligible, the 24-month extension gives you significantly more runway to secure H-1B sponsorship.
What happens to my OPT if I switch from a general radiology role to a mammography-specific position?
Changing roles during OPT is permissible as long as the new position remains directly related to your field of study. Mammography technologist roles fall squarely within radiologic technology, so the switch itself is not a problem. You must report the employer change to your DSO within 10 days, and any gap in employment exceeding 90 days total can jeopardize your OPT status.
Is ARRT certification required for OPT employment as a Mammography Technologist?
Virtually all U.S. employers require active ARRT certification, either in radiography or the advanced mammography subspecialty. Some states also impose their own radiologic technologist licensure requirements on top of ARRT. Without these credentials in place, your application will not progress regardless of your OPT status, so ensure both are current before you begin your job search.
