How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Registered Radiologic Technologist
Get ARRT certified before you apply
ARRT certification is the baseline credential most employers require before extending an offer. Having it in hand before you start applying removes a common hiring barrier and signals you're ready to work without a credentialing delay.
Confirm state licensure requirements early
Each state has its own radiologic technology license, and some take 6 to 12 weeks to process. Apply for licensure in your target state as soon as your OPT is approved so you're not losing work authorization time waiting on paperwork.
Frame your clinical rotations as U.S. work experience
Supervised clinical hours completed during your program count as relevant U.S. healthcare experience. List the facility names, modalities you worked with, and patient volume. This reassures employers you're already familiar with U.S. clinical workflows and protocols.
Bring up OPT authorization proactively in interviews
Don't wait for employers to ask about your work authorization status. State clearly that you're authorized to work on OPT and explain the timeline. Employers unfamiliar with OPT often assume it's complicated, so a clear explanation reduces hesitation early.
Research which modalities are in highest demand
Technologists with cross-training in CT, MRI, or fluoroscopy are harder to replace and more likely to receive sponsorship support. Highlighting additional modality certifications beyond basic radiography strengthens your case when an employer weighs the cost of sponsoring you.

Can I work as a Registered Radiologic Technologist on OPT?
Yes, F-1 students who have completed a radiologic technology or related healthcare program can work as Registered Radiologic Technologists during their OPT period. Your employment must be directly related to your field of study. ARRT certification and a state license are required before you can begin practicing clinically, so confirm both are in place before your start date.
Does a Registered Radiologic Technologist role qualify for STEM OPT extension?
Radiologic technology programs are generally classified under CIP codes that do not appear on the STEM OPT designated degree list, so most graduates are not eligible for the 24-month STEM extension. However, if your degree is in a qualifying STEM field such as biomedical engineering or health informatics and you work in a radiologic technologist role, eligibility may apply. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before relying on a STEM extension.
How do I find Registered Radiologic Technologist employers willing to sponsor OPT workers?
Migrate Mate is designed specifically for F-1 OPT job seekers and lists healthcare employers with a history of sponsoring international workers. Filtering by role type and sponsorship willingness saves significant time compared to cold-applying to employers who have no prior experience with OPT. Large hospital networks and academic medical centers are generally the most sponsorship-friendly employers in this field.
What happens to my employment if my OPT expires before my employer files for H-1B?
If your OPT expires before H-1B status begins, you'll have a gap in work authorization and must stop working. H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date, so timing matters significantly. Some employers apply for cap-exempt H-1B status through affiliated nonprofits or research institutions, which can offer a faster path. Discuss the H-1B timeline with your employer well before your OPT end date.
Do I need a separate work authorization document for each clinical site if I rotate between facilities?
Your OPT EAD authorizes you to work for any employer in your field, so rotating between clinical sites within the same employment arrangement is generally permissible. However, if you're employed by a staffing agency and placed at different facilities, ensure the agency is listed as your employer on your OPT records. Notify your DSO if your employment arrangement changes materially, such as switching to a new employer entirely.
