Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Maxillofacial Surgeon
Target academic medical centers first
Hospital systems affiliated with dental or medical schools are far more experienced with international trainees and OPT documentation. They have dedicated GME offices that handle work authorization paperwork routinely, making them the most practical starting point for your search.
Confirm your OPT covers residency training
Oral and maxillofacial surgery residency programs qualify as OPT-authorized employment if the work directly relates to your degree field. Verify with your DSO that your approved OPT classification covers clinical surgical training before accepting any position.
Apply for STEM OPT extension early if eligible
If your underlying degree is in a STEM-classified field, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. File Form I-765 at least 90 days before your standard OPT expires to avoid any gap in work authorization during residency.
Ask about H-1B or J-1 sponsorship timelines upfront
Maxillofacial surgery residencies typically run four to six years. Raise visa sponsorship beyond OPT during initial interviews so you and the program understand the long-term authorization plan before you commit to a multi-year training position.
Get your USMLE or NBDE documentation in order
Most hospital-based OMS programs require passing USMLE Steps or NBDE board scores before hiring internationally trained candidates. Having these credentials verified and ready to present signals seriousness and reduces administrative delays in the credentialing process.
Work with your DSO to document employment authorization correctly
Every employer change, even within a residency match, requires updating your OPT employer record with your DSO through SEVIS. Submit your employer details promptly after matching to avoid any compliance gap that could jeopardize your F-1 status.
Maxillofacial Surgeon OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a maxillofacial surgeon on OPT?
Yes, if the position directly relates to your degree field, which typically means oral and maxillofacial surgery or dentistry. Most OPT-authorized positions in this specialty are residency training roles at accredited hospital programs. Independent surgical practice without institutional sponsorship is not feasible on OPT alone, given state licensing requirements that effectively require you to transition to H-1B visa or another long-term visa.
Does an OMS residency count as OPT-authorized employment?
Yes. An accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program qualifies as OPT-authorized employment because it is directly related to your dental or medical degree. You must report the employer to your DSO and ensure the position is logged in SEVIS. Working more than 20 hours per week is permitted on full-time post-completion OPT, which covers most residency schedules.
How do I find maxillofacial surgeon jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to find maxillofacial surgeon positions that are open to F-1 OPT candidates. The platform filters for employers experienced with international work authorization, saving you from applying to programs that will not consider OPT holders. You can also search the NRMP and MATCH programs specifically for OMS residency positions that welcome international applicants.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my residency program changes affiliated hospitals?
If your residency program shifts your clinical rotations to a new affiliated hospital, your OPT authorization generally follows you because your employing entity remains the residency program itself, not the specific hospital site. However, notify your DSO of any material change in your employment situation to ensure your SEVIS record stays current and accurate throughout the training period.
Will I need H-1B sponsorship after OPT expires if I complete a maxillofacial surgery residency?
Almost certainly yes. OMS residencies run four to six years, and standard OPT plus any STEM extension typically covers two to three years at most. Most academic medical centers and hospital systems that train international residents are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. Clarify this sponsorship pathway with the program coordinator before you match.
