OPT Medical Oncologist Jobs
Medical Oncologist jobs on OPT require employers willing to sponsor an H-1B visa or O-1 visa after your OPT period ends. Oncology roles qualify as specialty occupations, and STEM OPT extension is not available for M.D.-based positions, making employer visa sponsorship planning critical from day one.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Medical Oncologist
Target academic medical centers and NCI-designated cancer centers
These institutions have established immigration infrastructure and regularly sponsor H-1B visas for oncologists. They're far more likely to have in-house legal teams familiar with physician sponsorship than smaller private practices or community hospitals.
Confirm your OPT authorization covers clinical work
Medical Oncologist roles involve direct patient care, which requires your OPT to be authorized for your specific job classification. Verify your EAD lists the correct employer and position before starting any clinical duties to avoid unauthorized employment issues.
Raise visa sponsorship before the offer stage
Oncology hiring cycles are long. Bringing up H-1B sponsorship after an offer creates friction. Address it early in conversations with program directors or physician recruiters so both sides can assess feasibility before investing significant time.
Understand how fellowship timing intersects with OPT
Most medical oncologists enter fellowship after residency. If you're on OPT during fellowship, your 12-month clock is running. Map out your fellowship end date against OPT expiration to ensure your employer files H-1B paperwork before your authorization lapses.
Research J-1 waiver pathways as an alternative route
If you completed residency or fellowship on J-1 visa status, a Conrad 30 or NHSC waiver can convert you to H-1B without the lottery. Underserved area positions and VA hospitals actively recruit physicians through these pathways.
Document your medical training and board eligibility thoroughly
Specialty occupation petitions for physicians require evidence that the role demands your specific degree and training. USMLE scores, board certification status, and fellowship credentials all strengthen the H-1B petition your sponsoring employer will file.
Medical Oncologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Medical Oncologist on OPT?
Yes, but with important constraints. Your OPT employment authorization must match your degree field and the oncologist role at the specific employer listed on your EAD. Medical Oncologist positions qualify as specialty occupations under immigration law, but your OPT work must be directly related to your degree program. Clinical patient care is permissible as long as your authorization is current and employer-specific.
Is STEM OPT extension available for Medical Oncologist jobs?
No. The STEM OPT 24-month extension applies only to STEM-designated degree programs under DHS guidelines. Medical degrees, including M.D. and D.O., are not on the STEM OPT eligibility list. This means most medical oncologists on F-1 OPT have a 12-month authorization window, making it critical to secure H-1B sponsorship well before that period ends.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Oncologists?
Academic medical centers, NCI-designated cancer centers, and large hospital systems such as university hospitals affiliated with medical schools are the most reliable sponsors. These institutions have established legal and HR processes for physician immigration. Community oncology practices and smaller clinics can sponsor but often lack the infrastructure, making the process slower and less predictable. Browse Medical Oncologist roles with sponsorship on Migrate Mate to identify active employers.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Medical Oncologist OPT students?
Most Medical Oncologist roles at for-profit hospitals and private practices are subject to the H-1B cap and lottery, meaning selection is not guaranteed. However, positions at nonprofit hospitals, academic institutions, and government health facilities are cap-exempt, allowing year-round H-1B filing without lottery participation. Targeting cap-exempt employers significantly improves your ability to transition from OPT to H-1B status without interruption.
What happens to my OPT if my fellowship or residency ends before I find a permanent oncology position?
Your OPT remains valid as long as you are employed in a role directly related to your degree field within the authorized employer. If you complete training and have a gap before securing a permanent Medical Oncologist position, you enter OPT's unemployment allowance period, which is capped at 90 days total. Exceeding that limit without employment violates your F-1 status, so planning ahead is essential.
