- Act as a Tier 2/3 escalation point for network-related issues submitted through the help desk.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date network documentation including topology diagrams, device inventories, and configurations.
- Collaborate with IT teammates on infrastructure projects, technology assessments, and system upgrades.
- Be available for occasional after-hours or weekend work to support planned maintenance windows or urgent incidents.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Network Administrator
Target employers with established IT infrastructure teams
Large enterprises, hospitals, universities, and government contractors maintain dedicated network teams and sponsor visa holders regularly. These organizations have HR processes built for work authorization, making OPT sponsorship a routine part of hiring rather than an exception.
Get your CCNA or CompTIA Network+ before applying
Industry certifications signal job-ready skills to hiring managers who may be unfamiliar with OPT. A CCNA or Network+ on your resume reduces perceived risk and accelerates hiring decisions, especially at employers sponsoring for the first time.
Apply before your OPT start date, not after
Most Network Administrator roles require an immediate or near-term start. Apply three to four months before graduation so your OPT authorization timeline aligns with the employer's onboarding process and you avoid gaps in work authorization.
Clarify STEM OPT eligibility early in conversations
If your degree is in computer science, IT, or a STEM-designated field, mention your STEM OPT extension eligibility upfront. This gives employers a 36-month runway with you before needing to file an H-1B, which often resolves sponsorship hesitation.
Focus your job search on OPT-friendly employers
Use Migrate Mate to find Network Administrator roles at employers that have sponsored OPT and H-1B candidates before. Filtering by sponsorship history saves time and keeps your applications focused on realistic opportunities rather than long-shot cold outreach.
Prepare to explain your authorization status clearly and confidently
Recruiters often misunderstand OPT. Have a two-sentence explanation ready: you're authorized to work full-time right now, and your employer files an E-Verify case, not a visa petition. Removing confusion early keeps your candidacy moving forward.
Network Administrator OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Network Administrator on F-1 OPT?
Yes. Network Administrator roles qualify for F-1 OPT as long as the work is directly related to your field of study, such as computer science, information technology, or a related STEM discipline. Your employer enrolls in E-Verify to confirm your work authorization. There is no petition or lottery involved during the OPT period itself.
Do Network Administrator jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most do. Network Administrator positions typically fall under CIP codes aligned with computer and information sciences, which are STEM-designated fields. If your degree carries a qualifying CIP code, you can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension before your initial 12-month OPT expires, giving you up to three years of total OPT authorization.
How do I find Network Administrator employers that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Network Administrator roles specifically from employers open to sponsoring F-1 OPT candidates. Searching there filters out companies unlikely to work with international students and surfaces employers with a track record of supporting H-1B sponsorship after OPT, which is the most practical path to long-term work authorization in this field.
Will my Network Administrator job qualify as STEM for OPT purposes if my title is different?
USCIS looks at the actual duties and the relationship to your degree field, not just the job title. If you are managing network infrastructure, configuring systems, or supporting IT operations and your degree is in a STEM field, the role will generally qualify. Your Designated School Official can confirm eligibility before you accept an offer.
What happens to my OPT if my Network Administrator employer does H-1B sponsorship?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf by April 1 of the cap year and you are selected in the lottery, your OPT or STEM OPT remains valid while USCIS adjudicates the petition. If approved, your H-1B status begins October 1. If not selected, you continue working on OPT until your authorization expires.
