Target employers with established administrative teams
Large corporations, law firms, hospitals, and universities hire office secretaries regularly and are more likely to have HR teams familiar with OPT work authorization. Smaller employers may hesitate due to unfamiliarity with the process.
Emphasize your degree's relevance to the role
OPT authorization ties your work to your field of study. Frame your business administration or management degree as direct preparation for office operations, scheduling, correspondence, and records management to strengthen your application.
Be upfront about your OPT timeline
Tell employers early how long your OPT authorization lasts and whether you have STEM OPT extension eligibility. Employers planning long-term hires need this information to assess whether sponsoring an H-1B visa later is viable.
Highlight software proficiency prominently
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and scheduling tools like Outlook or Calendly signals immediate productivity. Employers are more willing to navigate OPT paperwork for candidates who clearly require minimal onboarding.
Prepare a brief explanation of OPT for interviews
Many hiring managers are unfamiliar with F-1 OPT. Have a clear two-sentence explanation ready: what OPT is, that you're already authorized to work, and that no employer petition is required for initial authorization.
Focus your search on organizations with OPT hiring history
Some employers have sponsored international students repeatedly and understand the process. Migrate Mate surfaces office and administrative roles at employers open to OPT candidates, saving time spent on positions that will not move forward.
Office Secretary OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Office Secretary role qualify for F-1 OPT work authorization?
It depends on your field of study. OPT requires that your job be directly related to your degree. If you studied business administration, office management, communications, or a related field, an Office Secretary role will generally qualify. A liberal arts or unrelated degree may require a closer review of how your coursework connects to administrative support work.
Do employers need to file any paperwork to hire me on OPT as an Office Secretary?
No employer petition or visa sponsorship is required during your initial OPT period. You are already authorized to work, and your employer simply needs to verify your Employment Authorization Document. The main obligation for employers is reporting your employment start date to your DSO within 10 days so your SEVIS record stays current.
Can I work as an Office Secretary on a STEM OPT extension?
Possibly, but STEM OPT is more restrictive. Your role must be directly tied to a STEM-designated degree, and your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a formal training plan. Most Office Secretary roles are classified under business or administrative fields rather than STEM, so eligibility depends heavily on your specific degree CIP code.
Where can I find Office Secretary jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate lists administrative and office support roles at employers open to hiring F-1 OPT students. Filtering by OPT eligibility saves time by excluding postings where the employer has no history of or interest in international candidates. Browsing by industry, such as healthcare, legal, or higher education, can also help identify sectors with stronger OPT hiring patterns.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my Office Secretary job ends before my EAD expires?
F-1 OPT students may accumulate up to 90 days of unemployment during the standard OPT period, or 150 days across the total OPT and STEM extension period. If your Office Secretary role ends, that clock starts immediately. Finding new qualifying employment before reaching the limit is essential, as exceeding it results in automatic termination of your F-1 status.
