Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
OT roles often qualify for the 24-month STEM extension if your degree is in electrical engineering, computer science, or systems engineering. Verify your program's CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer to confirm eligibility.
Target employers with existing OPT infrastructure
Large industrial and energy companies like Honeywell, Siemens, and Rockwell Automation regularly hire OPT students into OT roles. Established HR teams understand OPT compliance requirements, which reduces delays between offer and your actual start date.
Align your OPT start date with your job search timeline
USCIS gives you a 90-day window to begin employment after OPT approval. Plan your application early so your EAD arrives before any offer deadline, since OT employers in critical infrastructure sectors often have firm onboarding schedules.
Address security clearance requirements proactively
Some OT roles in defense or government-adjacent sectors require U.S. security clearances that OPT students cannot hold. Ask about clearance requirements during the screening stage so you don't invest time in a process that will ultimately disqualify you.
Document how your role connects to your degree
For OPT and STEM OPT, your job must be directly related to your field of study. Keep written documentation explaining how your OT responsibilities, such as network security or systems integration, connect to your specific degree program and coursework.
Understand the employer's E-Verify obligation for STEM OPT
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before you can begin the extension. Confirm this during the offer stage, not after signing. Most large OT employers already participate, but smaller industrial firms may not.
Operational Technology Ot OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students work in Operational Technology roles?
Yes. OT roles in industrial controls, SCADA engineering, and cybersecurity for critical infrastructure are legitimate OPT-eligible positions as long as the work is directly related to your field of study. Engineering, computer science, and information systems degrees are the most common qualifying programs. Your DSO can confirm that your specific role meets the OPT employment definition.
Do Operational Technology jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most do, provided your degree is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, systems engineering, and computer science routinely support STEM OPT extensions for OT positions. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify, and you must submit a formal training plan through your school before the extension begins.
Where can I find OPT-friendly Operational Technology jobs?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT and international students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship compatibility. Searching there lets you focus on OT employers who have already demonstrated willingness to hire students on work authorization, rather than filtering through postings that exclude international candidates.
Are there OT roles that OPT students cannot legally take?
Yes. OT positions tied to classified U.S. government contracts or requiring a security clearance are generally off-limits for OPT students, since clearances require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence. Roles at some defense contractors and federal utilities fall into this category. Always confirm clearance requirements during the initial screening call before proceeding.
What happens to my OT job if my OPT expires before H-1B approval?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on time and USCIS receives it before your OPT expires, a cap-gap extension automatically protects your work authorization through September 30 of that year. This is critical for OT roles with continuous operations that cannot tolerate gaps, so coordinate your employer's filing timeline carefully with your DSO.
