OPT Personal Assistant Jobs
Personal Assistant jobs on OPT require employers who can either sponsor H-1B visa later or tolerate the 12-to-36-month authorization window. Roles span executive support, household management, and celebrity or high-net-worth clientele, and CAP-exempt employers in nonprofit or academic settings can be especially OPT-friendly.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Personal Assistant
Frame your degree as directly relevant
Personal Assistant roles require a clear connection between your field of study and the job duties. Degrees in business administration, communications, or hospitality management align well and strengthen your OPT authorization for this title.
Pursue CAP-exempt employers first
Universities, nonprofits, and research institutions hire Personal Assistants for senior administrators. These employers are H-1B CAP-exempt, meaning sponsorship can happen at any time without waiting for the April lottery.
Apply early if you have STEM OPT
If your degree qualifies for the 24-month STEM extension, communicate that upfront. It gives employers a 36-month total runway, which meaningfully reduces their urgency to sponsor you immediately and increases your chances of an offer.
Emphasize discretion and cross-cultural fluency
International Personal Assistants often support global executives who travel frequently. Your multilingual skills or cross-cultural background can be a genuine competitive advantage, so make those central to your resume and cover letter.
Be transparent about your timeline during interviews
Disclose your OPT expiration date and any STEM extension eligibility before an offer is made. Employers who see a clear, manageable timeline are far more likely to move forward than those caught off guard later.
Personal Assistant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Personal Assistant on F-1 OPT?
Yes, as long as the role is directly related to your field of study. A business administration or communications graduate working as a Personal Assistant for a corporate executive generally satisfies the OPT employment requirement. Roles involving purely personal errands with no connection to your degree may not qualify, so review the job description carefully before accepting.
Do Personal Assistant employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas?
Sponsorship is less common in this role than in fields like engineering or finance, but it does happen. Large corporations, entertainment companies, and private family offices that rely heavily on a trusted Personal Assistant are the most likely to sponsor. CAP-exempt employers such as universities are also a reliable path. Finding those willing employers takes targeted searching, which is exactly what Migrate Mate is built for.
Does my degree need to match the Personal Assistant job description?
Yes. USCIS requires that OPT employment be directly related to your major. A Personal Assistant role at a company where you apply skills from a business, communications, or hospitality degree is generally defensible. A purely administrative or domestic role with no academic connection could jeopardize your OPT status. Always keep documentation showing how your duties relate to your field of study.
What happens to my OPT status if my Personal Assistant employer lets me go?
You have a 90-day unemployment allowance across the full OPT period, or 150 days on the STEM extension. If your employer terminates you, report the separation to your DSO within 10 days and begin your job search immediately. Exceeding the unemployment limit without authorized employment puts your F-1 status at risk, so time is a genuine constraint here.
Are there Personal Assistant jobs that offer more visa security for OPT students?
Yes. Personal Assistant positions at H-1B CAP-exempt organizations, including research universities, nonprofit foundations, and government-affiliated institutions, offer the most stability because sponsorship can happen any time without lottery dependency. Corporate roles at large companies with active immigration programs are the next best option. Both categories require knowing where to look, which a dedicated OPT job board like Migrate Mate makes more efficient.
