ABOUT THE ROLE
This internship will involve supporting the design and validation of our commercial product. The intern will contribute to the design of a regenerative drying and purification system to enable efficient and continuous production of high-purity hydrogen. Working closely with an R&D engineer, the intern will characterize thermal/separation processes, develop control systems, and optimize operating parameters to satisfy key reliability and cost constraints. As the directly responsible individual overseeing an experimental test station, the intern will develop a data analysis framework to provide key insights into long-term physicochemical phenomena. The role may involve working with vendors to design and develop custom components.
REQUIREMENTS
-
Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in Chemical / Materials / Mechanical / Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or similar.
-
Comfortable rolling up their sleeves to work with basic mechanical/electrical components, troubleshoot independently, and motivated to take ownership (agency) of hands-on lab work.
-
Strong fundamentals and problem-solving intuition in one or more of the following areas: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, phase equilibria.
-
Thrives in a fast-moving environment and can learn, iterate, and execute with velocity.
-
Must be available to start in March/April 2026 and work on-site in Mountain View, CA.
-
Highly organized with strong attention to detail and a commitment to following through (accountability).
-
Clear, thoughtful communicator who works well on small, collaborative teams.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in R D Engineering
Target STEM-designated programs first
Your R&D engineering role almost certainly qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your degree is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List before accepting an offer, so you have the full three years of OPT runway.
Prioritize employers with active H-1B histories
R&D divisions at established companies like Intel, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin file H-1B petitions regularly. An employer with a track record of sponsorship is far more likely to transition you from OPT to long-term status without friction after your authorization period ends.
Highlight research output in your application
Publications, patents, conference presentations, and lab projects are direct signals of R&D fit. List them prominently on your resume. Employers hiring for research roles weigh demonstrated output heavily, and this also strengthens future visa petitions like O-1 or EB-1.
Apply before your OPT start date
R&D hiring cycles move slowly. Technical screenings, presentations, and committee reviews can stretch four to eight weeks. Start applications at least three months before your OPT begins so offer timing aligns with your work authorization window and you avoid gaps.
Clarify the employer's E-Verify enrollment early
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm this before your interview advances too far. Most large R&D employers are enrolled, but startups and university-adjacent labs sometimes are not, which disqualifies them for STEM extensions.
Frame your OPT timeline as an asset
Three years of authorized work gives employers meaningful runway to evaluate your fit before committing to H-1B sponsorship. Position this proactively in interviews. R&D managers focused on long-term projects often see extended OPT periods as low-risk, valuable trial arrangements.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do R&D engineering jobs qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Most do, provided your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or materials science. The role itself must also be directly related to your degree. Confirm your specific program appears on the official STEM Designated Degree Program List before relying on the extension for job search planning.
How do I find R&D engineering employers willing to sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters R&D engineering jobs by OPT sponsorship willingness, so you're not cold-applying to companies that won't work with F-1 students. Employers in aerospace, semiconductor, biotech, and defense sectors tend to have the most established OPT and H-1B pipelines, making them reliable targets.
Can I work at a university research lab on OPT?
Yes, university labs are eligible OPT employers as long as the position is paid and directly related to your degree field. However, confirm the institution is enrolled in E-Verify if you plan to apply for the STEM OPT extension. Many universities are enrolled, but individual departments or affiliated research centers sometimes operate separately and may not qualify.
What happens to my OPT status if my R&D role changes within the same company?
A role change within the same employer is generally permissible on OPT as long as the new position remains directly related to your degree. You don't need to update your I-20 for an internal transfer, but your Designated School Official should be informed if your job title or responsibilities shift significantly. Document how the new role connects to your field of study.
Does R&D engineering work experience strengthen an H-1B or EB petition later?
Significantly. R&D roles build exactly the kind of specialized experience USCIS weighs heavily in H-1B specialty occupation arguments and in employment-based green card categories like EB-2 and EB-1B for outstanding researchers. Patents, publications, and citations accumulated during your OPT period also support O-1A petitions, which have no annual cap or lottery requirement.
