Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Registered Dental Assistant
Verify your state registration before applying
Each state has its own Registered Dental Assistant requirements. Confirm your existing credentials meet the state's licensing board standards before submitting applications, since employers won't wait for you to complete additional exams after an offer is extended.
Target multi-location dental groups over solo practices
Larger dental service organizations have dedicated HR teams familiar with work authorization paperwork. Solo practitioners often decline OPT candidates simply because they don't know the process, not because they're unwilling to hire internationally trained assistants.
Address your OPT timeline proactively in interviews
Dental offices plan staffing months ahead. Telling hiring managers your exact OPT end date and whether H-1B visa sponsorship is on the table removes ambiguity and signals professionalism, making it easier for them to commit to an offer.
Highlight any expanded function certifications
Certifications in coronal polishing, radiography, or expanded functions make you more valuable to employers weighing the overhead of OPT paperwork. The more billable procedures you can perform independently, the stronger your case for sponsorship consideration.
Confirm the employer will sign your OPT employment documentation promptly
Your employer must be listed correctly on your EAD and SEVIS record. Ask HR early whether they've processed OPT employees before and who handles DSO verification, so there are no delays once your offer is accepted.
Apply to practices with a history of hiring international candidates
Practices that have hired OPT or H-1B workers before already understand the process. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented sponsorship activity, which is a faster path than cold-applying to offices with no international hiring track record.
Registered Dental Assistant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Registered Dental Assistant on OPT?
Yes, as long as your employment is directly related to your degree field. A dental assisting or dental science degree supports this role clearly. You must work at least 20 hours per week to maintain valid OPT status, and your position should align with the field listed on your EAD.
Does a Registered Dental Assistant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
No. Dental assisting programs are not on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by the Department of Homeland Security, so you cannot extend your OPT beyond the standard 12 months through the STEM pathway. Planning your H-1B or other visa sponsorship timeline well before your OPT expires is important for this career path.
Will dental employers sponsor an H-1B visa for a Registered Dental Assistant?
It depends on the employer. Large dental service organizations occasionally sponsor H-1B visas for clinical staff, but most small or independent practices do not. Registered Dental Assistant is generally classified under SOC codes that qualify as specialty occupations when a degree is required, but employer willingness varies significantly. Migrate Mate can help you identify practices with a documented history of visa sponsorship.
Do I need to get my dental assistant credentials re-evaluated to work in the U.S.?
If you trained outside the U.S., you'll likely need to meet the specific registration or certification requirements of the state where you plan to work. Some states require passing the Dental Assisting National Board exam or a state-specific practical exam. Completing this before your job search begins puts you in a much stronger position with employers.
How many hours per week must I work to maintain OPT status as a Registered Dental Assistant?
You must work at least 20 hours per week to satisfy the active employment requirement for OPT. Full-time dental assistant roles typically run 32 to 40 hours per week, which comfortably meets this threshold. If your hours drop below 20 for an extended period, your OPT status may be considered violated, so confirm your scheduled hours upfront with your employer.
