How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Security Project Manager
Clarify your OPT timeline upfront
Know exactly how many months remain on your OPT and whether you qualify for the 24-month STEM extension. Sharing this proactively helps employers assess sponsorship timelines before investing in interviews, reducing friction on both sides.
Target employers with federal security contracts
Government contractors in cybersecurity and physical security infrastructure routinely hire Security Project Managers and have established immigration sponsorship programs. These organizations understand visa timelines and are accustomed to supporting OPT and H-1B transitions.
Frame your degree as directly relevant
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the job. Emphasize coursework in information security, risk management, or systems engineering when your degree is in a related but not identical discipline to strengthen the specialty occupation case.
Highlight cross-functional project experience
Security Project Managers who can demonstrate leadership across IT, compliance, and physical security teams are harder to replace. Concrete examples of managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects make employers more willing to invest in long-term sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for OPT and H-1B purposes?
Security Project Manager positions typically qualify as specialty occupations because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree in information security, computer science, engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates whether the specific job duties require theoretical and practical application of specialized knowledge. Roles that blend security architecture oversight with project delivery are well-positioned, but general project management with only incidental security involvement may face more scrutiny.
Can I use my STEM OPT extension as a Security Project Manager?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information technology, or engineering, and your employer meets the E-Verify requirement. Security Project Manager roles at technology firms, defense contractors, and cybersecurity companies frequently qualify. Your Designated School Official can confirm whether your specific degree CIP code is on the STEM OPT extension list before you apply.
Where can I find Security Project Manager jobs that offer OPT sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Security Project Manager roles specifically filtered for employers willing to sponsor OPT and H-1B candidates. Searching Migrate Mate lets you focus on companies that have already indicated sponsorship readiness, which saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that an employer will not support your visa status.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my Security Project Manager contract ends between projects?
OPT allows up to 90 days of cumulative unemployment, or 150 days for STEM OPT extension holders. If your contract ends and you are between engagements, that gap counts toward your unemployment limit. Notify your DSO immediately when employment ends, and begin securing your next role as quickly as possible to avoid exhausting your authorized unemployment period.
Do security clearance requirements affect OPT eligibility for this role?
Some Security Project Manager positions require U.S. government security clearances, which are generally unavailable to non-U.S. citizens or non-permanent residents. OPT students holding F-1 status are almost never eligible for cleared positions. Focus your search on unclassified roles at commercial cybersecurity firms, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, and technology companies, where clearance is not a prerequisite.
