Who Are We?
We at Pine Rest believe in the power of healing and that everyone in our community has the right to expert care for mental health and substance use disorders. We are much more than just the third largest non-profit behavioral health system in the country, our 220-acre main campus, and our network of clinical sites across Michigan. We are a tight-knit community of healers who witness the impact of our life-changing work each day.
Each day, we are closing the gaps in access to care. We are innovating through leading-edge research, testing, programs, and treatment modalities that others replicate across the country. Our services include a state-of-the-art psychiatric urgent care center and a soon-to-be-built pediatric behavioral health center, outpatient, inpatient, partial hospitalization (day programs), assessment and testing, residential, addiction treatment and specialty services such as crisis response, employee assistance programs, forensic psychiatry and psychology, and neuromodulation. On-the-job educational programs for nurses, psychologists, advanced practice providers, psychiatrists, and chaplains are equipping the next generation of care providers.
We are passionate about serving and are honored to be a part of this incredible work.

Target nonprofits with established HR infrastructure
Large nonprofits and national volunteer organizations are more likely to have HR teams familiar with OPT work authorization. Smaller grassroots organizations may be unfamiliar with the process, which can slow down or complicate your onboarding significantly.
Clarify your work authorization upfront
When applying, clearly state you have OPT work authorization and do not require current sponsorship. Many hiring managers conflate OPT with visa sponsorship, so a brief one-line clarification in your cover letter prevents unnecessary confusion and keeps your application moving forward.
Align your degree field with the role's core functions
Volunteer Coordinator roles can draw from social work, public administration, communications, or nonprofit management backgrounds. Make sure your resume explicitly connects your degree coursework to the coordination and program management responsibilities listed in each job posting.
Track your OPT end date before accepting any offer
If your OPT authorization expires within a few months of starting, discuss timelines openly with the employer. Nonprofits rarely move quickly on H-1B visa sponsorship, so understanding the employer's future plans before accepting protects you from an abrupt work authorization gap.
Highlight volunteer management tools and metrics
Employers in this field look for candidates who understand volunteer tracking software and program outcome measurement. Demonstrating familiarity with database management or reporting tools, even from academic or student organization experience, strengthens your application considerably against domestic candidates.
Pursue roles at universities or government-affiliated nonprofits
Cap-exempt employers like universities, hospitals, and government-affiliated nonprofits can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. Starting your Volunteer Coordinator career at one of these organizations gives you a longer runway toward more stable work authorization after OPT ends.
Volunteer Coordinator OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Volunteer Coordinator job qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, as long as the role is directly related to your degree field. A student with a degree in social work, public administration, nonprofit management, or communications can typically qualify. Your DSO must confirm the connection between your degree program and the job duties before you begin working.
Do Volunteer Coordinator employers typically sponsor H-1B visas?
Sponsorship is uncommon in the nonprofit sector, primarily because most organizations operate with limited HR budgets and have little experience navigating immigration petitions. Your strongest options are larger national nonprofits, university-based volunteer programs, or government-affiliated organizations, which occasionally sponsor H-1B petitions or qualify as cap-exempt employers who can file year-round.
How do I find Volunteer Coordinator jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate lists Volunteer Coordinator positions from employers who are open to hiring OPT students, so you can filter specifically for roles that won't screen you out based on work authorization status. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process.
Can I work as a Volunteer Coordinator under STEM OPT extension?
Only if your degree is from a STEM-designated field and your employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most Volunteer Coordinator roles are tied to social science, communications, or humanities degrees, which do not qualify for the 24-month STEM extension. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO to determine whether a STEM extension applies to your situation.
What happens if my OPT expires while I'm working as a Volunteer Coordinator?
You must stop working immediately when your OPT authorization expires unless you have an approved cap-gap extension from a pending H-1B petition filed by your employer. If your employer is not pursuing sponsorship, you'll need to explore other status options before your OPT ends. Planning at least six months ahead gives you the most flexibility.
