OR Tech Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an or tech in Kentucky?
To work as an or tech in Kentucky, complete an accredited surgical technology program through a community college or hospital-based school, such as those offered at Bluegrass Community and Technical College or Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. Kentucky does not currently mandate state licensure, but most employers require national certification through the NBSTSA as a Certified Surgical Technologist. Passing the CST exam after graduation is the standard path to getting hired.
Which companies hire or techs in Kentucky?
Employers hiring or techs in Kentucky right now include Target, UofL Health, and Priority Life Care, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Kentucky's largest health systems and regional hospital networks account for the majority of openings, with ambulatory surgery centers adding consistent volume in the Louisville and Lexington markets.
Which Kentucky cities have the most or tech jobs?
The cities with the most or tech openings in Kentucky are Louisville, Florence, and Fort Wright. Louisville dominates because Norton Healthcare, Baptist Health, and UofL Health operate multiple surgical facilities there, while Lexington's volume is driven by UK HealthCare's academic medical center and regional trauma programs. Northern Kentucky benefits from proximity to the greater Cincinnati health system network across the Ohio River.
How can I get hired as an or tech in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to surgical tech externship or new-graduate programs at large Kentucky health systems such as Norton Healthcare in Louisville or UK HealthCare in Lexington, which routinely bring on recent graduates from accredited programs. Candidates who have completed clinical rotations in a Kentucky hospital hold a clear advantage. Lateral moves from central sterile processing or surgical prep technician roles are another common route, as employers value candidates who already understand instrument handling and sterile field protocols.
Where can I find and apply to or tech jobs in Kentucky?
You can find and apply to or tech jobs in Kentucky on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kentucky openings from hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and health systems across the state. Search the listings, find roles that fit your experience and location, and apply directly.
