OR Tech Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a or tech in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license for surgical technologists, but most hospitals and surgery centers require the Certified Surgical Technologist credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. To earn it, complete an accredited surgical technology program approved by CAAHEP or ABHES, then pass the CST exam. Programs are offered at community colleges and vocational schools throughout Texas, and most take about two years to complete.
How much do OR teches make in Texas?
OR teches in Texas earn a median of about $65,220 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,950 for the lowest 10% to over $92,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire or techs in Texas?
Employers hiring or techs in Texas right now include Aggreko, University of Texas Medical Branch, and Memorial Hermann Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's dense network of hospital systems and freestanding ambulatory surgery centers keeps demand consistent across both large urban markets and growing suburban communities.
Which Texas cities have the most or tech jobs?
Dallas, Galveston, and Houston have the most or tech openings in Texas. Houston's concentration of large hospital systems and Texas Medical Center institutions drives the highest volume, while Dallas-Fort Worth's rapid population growth fuels ongoing expansion at health systems and surgery centers, and San Antonio's strong military medical presence and growing civilian hospital network add significant demand.
Are there remote or tech jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. OR tech work is hands-on and requires physical presence in the sterile field, so the vast majority of positions are fully on-site. About 26% of or tech openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be limited to education, training coordination, or medical sales support roles rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a or tech in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to new-graduate or extern programs, which large Texas systems such as HCA Healthcare and Baylor Scott & White Health run specifically for recent surgical technology graduates. Look for surgical tech extern or tech associate postings, which allow supervised scrubbing before full independence. Completing a CAAHEP-accredited program and sitting for the CST exam before applying gives you a clear edge, even without years of experience.
