Tips for Your OR Tech Job Search
Tailor your resume to each service line
Highlight the specific surgical specialties you've scrubbed for, such as ortho, neuro, or cardiothoracic, rather than listing generic OR experience. Hiring managers scan for case familiarity fast, so match your bullet points to the service lines the job posting names.
List certifications above your work history
Your CST credential, CNOR, or Tech in Surgery certification carries more weight than job titles in OR Tech screening. Place certifications in a dedicated section at the top of your resume so they clear automated filters before a recruiter ever reads your experience.
Filter openings by case volume and setting
A 500-bed trauma center and a same-day surgery center require very different skill sets. When you search for or tech roles, check whether the posting specifies case volume, specialty mix, or trauma level so you apply to environments that match your actual experience.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists or tech openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare to demonstrate sterile technique in interviews
Many OR Tech interviews include a scenario or practical component where you walk through your scrub process, instrument count protocol, or a breach-of-sterility response. Practice narrating your steps aloud so you can explain your technique clearly under pressure.
Negotiate shift differentials, not just base pay
OR Tech compensation often includes on-call requirements and weekend rotations. When you reach the offer stage, ask specifically about call pay rates, callback minimums, and how frequently techs rotate to nights, since these affect your real take-home more than base rate alone.
OR Tech Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most or techs?
The companies hiring the most or techs right now include Aggreko, Dorsey & Whitney LLP, and Self Regional Healthcare, with the largest share of openings in Texas, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large health systems and ambulatory surgery center networks tend to post the highest volume of roles consistently.
How many or tech jobs are remote?
About 19% of or tech openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, since the role is hands-on and tied to the sterile field. The sub-areas with the most remote opportunity are surgical technology education, clinical documentation review, and instrument processing consultation roles.
How do you become a or tech?
You become an or tech by completing an accredited surgical technology program, which can take the form of a certificate, associate degree, or military training equivalent. After graduating, you sit for the CST exam through the NBSTSA. Most employers require you to pass that exam before your start date, and some states have their own licensure requirements on top of national certification.
How do you get hired as an or tech with little experience?
Employers hiring entry-level or techs typically look for candidates who completed their clinical rotations across multiple specialties and can name specific procedures they scrubbed. Emphasize your practicum hours, the case types you assisted with, and any sterile processing or central supply work you did alongside your program. Ambulatory surgery centers and smaller specialty clinics are often more willing to train new grads than large trauma centers.
What does the or tech interview process look like?
Most or tech interviews start with a phone screen from HR covering availability, shift flexibility, and certification status. A second interview with the surgical services manager typically includes scenario questions about count discrepancies, breaks in sterile technique, and how you handle surgeon preference cards. Some facilities add a brief practical or tour of the OR suite before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to or tech jobs?
You can find and apply to or tech jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search for roles that match your specialty experience and preferred setting, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
