Tips for Your Pediatric Social Worker Job Search
Tailor your resume to the setting
Hospital-based roles want experience with care coordination and discharge planning, while school districts prioritize IEP participation and crisis intervention. Customize your resume for each setting rather than submitting the same document everywhere you apply.
Highlight licensure status clearly
List your licensure level, issuing state, and expiration date near the top of your resume. Many pediatric social worker postings screen out candidates before a human review if licensure isn't immediately visible, especially for clinical or independently practicing roles.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists pediatric social worker openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Search by population and setting simultaneously
Use search terms like 'pediatric oncology social worker' or 'school-based mental health' rather than just 'pediatric social worker' to surface postings that match your exact clinical experience and avoid roles outside your focus area.
Prepare case vignettes before your interview
Interviewers in pediatric settings almost always ask behavioral questions tied to real cases involving minors and families. Prepare two or three anonymized vignettes that demonstrate your assessment, intervention, and documentation decisions in high-stakes situations.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate salary
In pediatric social work offers, caseload size and documentation requirements often matter more than starting pay over the long term. Ask directly about average caseload, charting systems, and after-hours on-call expectations before accepting any offer.
Pediatric Social Worker Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most pediatric social workers?
The companies hiring the most pediatric social workers right now include Ascension, Bronson Healthcare, and Brigham & Women'S Faulkner Hospital, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Massachusetts, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Children's hospitals and large hospital systems consistently account for a significant share of active openings.
How many pediatric social worker jobs are remote?
About 13% of pediatric social worker openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many other social work roles given the hands-on nature of pediatric care. Telehealth-based therapy and school consultation roles are the sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a pediatric social worker?
You become a pediatric social worker by completing a Master of Social Work degree from a CSWE-accredited program, then obtaining state licensure at the LMSW or LCSW level. Gaining field placement or early-career experience specifically with children, adolescents, or families strengthens your candidacy. Many practitioners pursue additional training in trauma-informed care, child development, or school-based mental health to specialize further.
Can you get hired as a pediatric social worker with little or no experience?
You can get hired in entry-level pediatric social work roles with limited direct experience if your MSW field placements involved children, adolescents, or family systems. Positions in child welfare agencies, school districts, and community mental health organizations are often the most open to new graduates. Volunteering with youth organizations and emphasizing coursework in child development or family therapy also strengthens your application for these roles.
What does the pediatric social worker interview process look like?
The pediatric social worker interview process typically begins with a phone screen focused on licensure status and clinical background, followed by one or two in-person or video interviews with the hiring manager and sometimes a multidisciplinary team. Expect behavioral questions about crisis situations, mandatory reporting decisions, and family engagement. Some hospital systems include a panel interview or a case-based scenario exercise as a final step.
Where can I find and apply to pediatric social worker jobs?
You can find and apply to pediatric social worker jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your licensure level, setting, and specialization, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
