The Shock & Detonation Physics Group (M-9) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has openings for multiple Postdoctoral Research Associates. Our work utilizes dynamic drivers (explosives, single- and two-stage gas guns, lasers) and static high pressures (diamond anvil cells, Paris-Edinburgh presses) to study fundamental physics and chemistry of relevance to the behavior of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. We also perform experiments at synchrotron and free electron laser user facilities such as the Dynamic Compression Sector and the High Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) at the Advance Photon Source, the Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC, Sandia's Z-machine, DESY, and the European XFEL. Our research informs multiscale models for equations of state used in the DOE's science-based stockpile modernization assessment. We seek outstanding internally motivated candidates interested in shock physics or detonation physics. Prior experience in high pressure research is desired, but less important than a solid background in experimentation, a strong intellectual curiosity, and meticulous laboratory skills. Potential research areas include:
- Equations of state and detonation properties of high explosives
- Equations of state and phase changes of inert materials, such as polymers, foams, ceramics, and metals
- Novel measurements and diagnostic development capable of elucidating material properties under single event dynamic loading conditions
The postdoctoral program at LANL enables successful candidates to tailor the direction of their research projects to best align with their background and interests, as well as the needs of our programmatic sponsors.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a postdoctoral research fellow in New Mexico?
You become a postdoctoral research fellow in New Mexico by completing a doctoral degree and applying directly to research institutions. New Mexico does not require a state-issued license for this role. The most common path is applying to postdoctoral openings at national laboratories like Sandia or Los Alamos or through the University of New Mexico's graduate school, which posts fellowships directly and often coordinates with federal sponsors. A strong dissertation and published work are the primary credentials that move candidates forward.
Which companies hire postdoctoral research fellows in New Mexico?
Employers hiring postdoctoral research fellows in New Mexico right now include Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Mexico's concentration of federally funded national laboratories and public research universities makes it one of the more active states for postdoctoral hiring relative to its overall population.
Which New Mexico cities have the most postdoctoral research fellow jobs?
The cities with the most postdoctoral research fellow openings in New Mexico are Los Alamos and Albuquerque. Albuquerque dominates because it is home to Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico, while Los Alamos draws heavily from its namesake national laboratory, and Las Cruces benefits from New Mexico State University's active research programs across agriculture, engineering, and the physical sciences.
Are there remote postdoctoral research fellow jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, but they are rare. Postdoctoral research work typically requires hands-on laboratory access, specialized equipment, or on-site collaboration, which limits full remote arrangements. About 5% of postdoctoral research fellow openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to be in computational modeling, data analysis, or theoretical research where physical lab presence is not required.
How can I get hired as a postdoctoral research fellow in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying while still completing your doctoral program, since New Mexico institutions like the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University routinely hire candidates whose dissertations are under review rather than fully defended. Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory also run graduate research assistant and student intern programs that frequently convert to postdoctoral positions. Strong dissertation work, a thesis committee connection to a New Mexico principal investigator, or a co-authored publication in your subfield can substitute for independent postdoctoral experience in these initial placements.
Where can I find and apply to postdoctoral research fellow jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to postdoctoral research fellow jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current New Mexico openings updated regularly. Search the roles available, identify the ones that match your research background and institution preferences, and apply directly through each listing. No signup is required to search or view the positions.
