INTRODUCTION
Mass General Brigham relies on a wide range of professionals, including doctors, nurses, business people, tech experts, researchers, and systems analysts to advance our mission. As a not-for-profit, we support patient care, research, teaching, and community service, striving to provide exceptional care. We believe that high-performing teams drive groundbreaking medical discoveries and invite all applicants to join us and experience what it means to be part of Mass General Brigham.
Job Summary
The salary range for this position is $70,000-$71,750.
The Anahtar Laboratory in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and collaborative postdoctoral research fellow to join our team. Our lab combines machine learning, genomics, and experimental microbiology to address the growing crisis of antimicrobial resistance, with a particular focus on discovering new antibiotic candidates and developing next-generation diagnostics for difficult-to-treat bacterial infections.
The hired candidate will focus on machine learning-guided antibiotic discovery against pathogens of urgent clinical concern. We have developed and deployed deep learning models to identify structurally novel antibacterial hits against bacteria, with a focus on Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We have also applied generative AI approaches to design entirely new antibiotic scaffolds that explore uncharted regions of chemical space. We validate our computational discoveries through rigorous experimental follow-up, including MIC testing across multidrug-resistant clinical isolates, mechanism of action studies, and in vivo mouse infection models.
Our lab sits at the intersection of basic research and clinical translation. Our work is directly informed by the resistant organisms, diagnostic gaps, and treatment failures we encounter clinically. We collaborate closely with engineers, clinicians, biologists, and chemists across MGH, Harvard Medical School, the Broad Institute, and MIT.
Located in Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital is a Harvard Medical School-affiliated academic medical center at the forefront of biomedical research and patient care. We are committed to building an inclusive, diverse, and equitable lab environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Recent graduates with a background in microbiology, chemistry, computer science, and/or immunology, a history of academic productivity, and excellent references are encouraged to apply.
Applicants are asked to send (1) their CV, (2) a cover letter describing their background, research interests, and goals for their post-doctoral time, and (3) a PDF of a paper they have written, to Melis Anahtar (manahtar@mgh.harvard.edu).

Tips for Your Postdoctoral Research Fellow Job Search
Tailor your CV to each lab's focus
Postdoctoral applications live or die on the CV. Match your methods, techniques, and publication keywords to the exact language in each job posting. Hiring committees skim dozens of CVs, so surface your most relevant work in the first half of page one.
Lead with your research independence
Principal investigators want evidence you can drive a project, not just execute tasks. Describe experiments you designed, grants you contributed to, and decisions you made without direct supervision. That distinction separates strong candidates from strong technicians in competitive searches.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists postdoctoral research fellow openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target labs with active funding cycles
A postdoctoral position depends on grant money. Before applying, check whether the PI has recently received NIH, NSF, or DOE awards. Positions in newly funded labs open quickly and stay open longer than those in labs nearing the end of a grant cycle.
Prepare a brief research statement for interviews
Most postdoctoral interviews include a seminar and a one-on-one with the PI. Prepare a five-minute verbal summary of your doctoral research and your proposed next project. PIs are evaluating whether your ideas fit their lab's trajectory, not just your technical skills.
Negotiate start date and project scope upfront
Offer letters for postdoctoral roles rarely go through HR in the same way industry jobs do. Discuss authorship expectations, which projects you'll own, and your start date directly with the PI before you accept, since those terms are far harder to revisit after you arrive.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most postdoctoral research fellows?
The companies hiring the most postdoctoral research fellows right now include Indiana University, National Institutes of Health, and Houston Methodist, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Massachusetts, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Research universities, national laboratories, and large pharmaceutical companies consistently account for the majority of postdoctoral openings nationwide.
How many postdoctoral research fellow jobs are remote?
About 4% of postdoctoral research fellow openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many other professional roles because most positions require on-site laboratory access. Computational biology, bioinformatics, data science research, and certain social science postdocs are the sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a postdoctoral research fellow?
Becoming a postdoctoral research fellow requires completing a doctoral degree in a relevant field, then securing a position in a lab or research institution. Identify PIs whose work aligns with yours, reach out directly with a targeted cover letter and CV, and apply to posted openings. Many positions are filled through personal referrals from doctoral advisors, so inform your committee you are on the market.
Can you get a postdoctoral research fellow position with little research experience?
Most postdoctoral positions require a completed PhD and some publication history, but candidates with limited first-author papers can still compete by highlighting co-authored work, conference presentations, and technical skills. Applying to labs that are newly funded or expanding into a new research area can improve your chances, since those PIs are often more open to training candidates whose backgrounds are adjacent rather than perfectly matched.
What does the postdoctoral research fellow interview process look like?
The postdoctoral interview process typically begins with an email or video call with the principal investigator to assess fit, followed by an in-person or virtual visit that includes a research seminar, individual meetings with lab members, and a conversation about project expectations. Some institutions require a written research proposal before the visit. The process is less standardized than corporate hiring, so timelines and steps vary by lab and institution.
Where can I find and apply to postdoctoral research fellow jobs?
You can find and apply to postdoctoral research fellow jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from institutions and research organizations across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your research background and apply directly to each one that fits.
