Research Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research in New Mexico?
Most research positions in New Mexico require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with graduate degrees strongly preferred for independent investigator roles. New Mexico does not have a single statewide research license, but roles at national laboratories and public universities often require passing federal background checks and, for health-related research, certification in human subjects protection through an accredited Institutional Review Board program. New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico both offer graduate pathways that feed directly into the state's major research employers.
Which companies hire researchs in New Mexico?
Employers hiring researchs in New Mexico right now include Los Alamos National Laboratory, University of New Mexico, and Sandia National Laboratories, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Mexico's research hiring is especially concentrated among federally funded national laboratories and the state's flagship public universities, which maintain large and recurring research staff needs across scientific and social science disciplines.
Which New Mexico cities have the most research jobs?
Los Alamos, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe account for the largest share of research openings in New Mexico. Albuquerque's concentration of federal laboratory operations and the University of New Mexico drives the bulk of statewide demand, while Santa Fe attracts policy and social science research tied to state government, and Las Cruces benefits from New Mexico State University's extensive research programs and agricultural research centers in the southern part of the state.
Are there remote research jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, and more than many applied fields, since a meaningful portion of research work involves data analysis, literature review, and report writing that can be done remotely. About 5% of research openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting growing flexibility in academic and policy research roles. Laboratory-based and fieldwork-heavy positions remain predominantly on-site, while data science, public health research, and qualitative social science roles offer the most remote opportunities.
How can I get hired as a research in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a research assistant or technician role, which Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of New Mexico all hire for on a recurring basis. Both national laboratories run internship and early-career pipeline programs specifically designed for candidates without full professional experience. Adjacent roles in data entry, laboratory support, or survey coordination frequently serve as lateral entry points, and completing a recognized human subjects research certification gives candidates a credible credential even before their first dedicated research position.
Where can I find and apply to research jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to research jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available positions, find roles that match your background and interests, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
