What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in power bi developer jobs.
- Proficiency in Power BI Desktop, Power Query, and DAX formula writing
- Experience designing and optimizing data models including star and snowflake schemas
- SQL skills for querying relational databases and writing complex joins
- Ability to connect Power BI to data sources such as Azure Synapse, SQL Server, and Excel
- Microsoft PL-300 certification or equivalent demonstrated Power BI expertise
- Experience publishing and managing reports and dashboards in Power BI Service
Tips for Your Power Bi Developer Job Search
Showcase your DAX and data model depth
Hiring managers scan resumes fast, so list specific DAX measures you've built, star schema designs you've implemented, and row-level security setups you've configured. Generic mentions of Power BI won't separate you from dozens of other applicants.
Build a public portfolio with real dashboards
Publish two or three Power BI reports to GitHub or a personal site using anonymized public datasets. Interviewers routinely ask for links, and having live examples shifts the conversation from theoretical to demonstrated.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists power bi developer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by data stack to target better fits
Power BI roles split between Azure-first shops and on-premise SQL Server environments. Identify which stack a company uses before applying and tailor your resume to emphasize the matching tools, whether that's Azure Synapse, SQL Server Analysis Services, or Dataflow Gen2.
Prep for the live report-build interview round
Many employers add a timed take-home or live coding round where you build a report from a provided dataset. Practice building a clean, filtered report with calculated columns and a well-formatted layout in under 90 minutes so the format doesn't catch you off guard.
Negotiate using certification and stack alignment
The PL-300 certification and hands-on Fabric or Azure experience consistently push offers higher. If you hold either, name them explicitly during negotiation and connect them to the specific reporting infrastructure the employer uses.
Power Bi Developer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most power bi developers?
The companies hiring the most power bi developers right now include Testingxperts, FreshDirect, and K&L GATES, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Washington, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is highest in industries with large data operations, particularly financial services, healthcare systems, and enterprise consulting firms.
How many power bi developer jobs are remote?
About 15% of power bi developer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting strong demand for distributed data teams. Report-building, DAX development, and data modeling work well remotely, while roles tied to on-site data warehouse infrastructure or client-facing consulting tend to require more in-person presence.
How do you become a power bi developer?
Start by learning Power BI Desktop through Microsoft's free learning paths, focusing on data modeling, Power Query transformations, and DAX. Build three to five portfolio reports using public datasets and publish them. Earn the PL-300 certification to signal foundational competency, then apply to junior roles or data analyst positions that include Power BI as a core tool, treating early roles as structured on-the-job training.
Can you get hired as a power bi developer without much experience?
Yes, entry-level power bi developer roles exist, especially at mid-size companies that need someone to own reporting without hiring a full data engineering team. A strong public portfolio of dashboards, PL-300 certification, and solid SQL fundamentals can substitute for years of experience in initial screening. Targeting industries actively building out their BI function, such as regional healthcare or growing retail operations, improves your chances significantly.
What does the power bi developer interview process look like?
Most processes run three to four stages. An initial recruiter screen covers your background and tools experience. A technical interview probes DAX logic, data model design choices, and how you handle slowly changing dimensions or large dataset performance. Many employers add a take-home or live report-build exercise. A final round with the data or analytics manager focuses on how you've handled ambiguous requirements and stakeholder feedback in past projects.
Where can I find and apply to power bi developer jobs?
You can find and apply to power bi developer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your skills, seniority level, and preferred location or remote setup, then apply directly to each one that fits.
