Pre-K Teacher Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pre-k teacher in Texas?
To become a pre-k teacher in Texas you need a bachelor's degree and a Texas educator certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency, which requires passing the TExES Early Childhood through Grade 6 Core Subjects exam and completing an approved teacher preparation program. Candidates pursuing a bilingual pre-k role also need to pass the TExES Bilingual Supplemental exam. Some private early childhood centers hire candidates with a Child Development Associate credential in place of full state certification.
How much do Pre-K teachers make in Texas?
Pre-K teachers in Texas earn a median of about $33,860 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $26,430 for the lowest 10% to over $49,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pre-k teachers in Texas?
Employers hiring pre-k teachers in Texas right now include Austin Independent School District, Dallas Independent School District, and Pflugerville Independent School District, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's size means both large urban independent school districts and federally funded Head Start grantees operating across the state generate a consistent volume of openings throughout the school year.
Which Texas cities have the most pre-k teacher jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Pflugerville have the most pre-k teacher openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because their massive independent school districts and dense networks of Head Start and private early childhood centers generate demand year-round, while San Antonio's large military-connected and low-income family population drives a high concentration of federally funded pre-k programs.
Are there remote pre-k teacher jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of pre-k teacher openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on, in-classroom nature of the work. The roles most likely to be performed remotely are instructional coaching, curriculum development, and early childhood special education consulting positions that do not require direct daily supervision of young children.
How can I get hired as a pre-k teacher in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying as a paraprofessional or classroom aide within a Texas independent school district while completing an alternative certification program through a provider approved by the Texas Education Agency. Large urban districts such as Houston ISD and Dallas ISD run grow-your-own programs and alternative certification pipelines specifically designed for candidates transitioning from roles such as childcare worker, Head Start aide, or bilingual community worker. Earning a Child Development Associate credential before applying gives candidates a measurable edge for private center and Head Start openings that do not require full state certification.
Where can I find and apply to pre-k teacher jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to pre-k teacher jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from school districts, Head Start programs, and private early childhood centers across the state. Find the roles that fit your certification level and preferred location, then apply directly to the employer through the listing.
