To become an esl teacher in Texas you must hold a valid Texas teaching certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency and add the ESL or Bilingual Education supplemental certificate by passing the appropriate TExES exam. Most positions require a bachelor's degree in education or a related field. Candidates completing an approved Texas educator preparation program can apply for their initial certificate through the TEA educator certification portal once they pass all required exams.
How much do esl teachers make in Texas?
Esl teachers in Texas earn a median of about $49,490 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,640 for the lowest 10% to over $63,790 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire esl teachers in Texas?
Employers hiring esl teachers in Texas right now include Dallas Independent School District, Austin Independent School District, and ALDINE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large urban school districts, community college systems, and nonprofit adult education providers are among the most consistent sources of openings given the state's significant English language learner population.
Which Texas cities have the most esl teacher jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most esl teacher openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth lead because their massive, diverse school districts and adult education networks create continuous demand, while San Antonio's large bilingual-education programs and growing workforce development sector sustain a strong second tier of openings.
Are there remote esl teacher jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since many esl teacher roles require in-person classroom instruction. About 0% of esl teacher openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the share of positions in online language programs, virtual charter schools, and corporate English training. Adult ESL and academic English courses delivered through community colleges or private language companies are the segments most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a esl teacher in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is substituting or serving as a bilingual paraprofessional in a large Texas district, which lets you build classroom hours while completing your TExES ESL supplemental exam. Houston ISD, Dallas ISD, and San Antonio's Northside ISD all hire instructional aides and teaching assistants who are actively pursuing certification, and many offer grow-your-own pipelines. Completing a Texas-approved educator preparation program, even an alternative certification program, signals readiness to districts that hire new teachers every spring and summer hiring cycle.
