About the Job
As a Principal Software Engineer at Avandra Imaging, you’ll serve as a hands-on technical leader, collaborating across Engineering, Product, and other areas of the business to shape and deliver systems that are secure, scalable, and high-impact. You’ll be trusted to drive architectural direction, mentor other engineers, and set quality standards across the stack.
This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in complex technical domains, influences through expertise rather than authority, and elevates the work of others through mentorship, collaboration, and a commitment to engineering excellence.
This role goes beyond individual contributions — you’ll model engineering excellence, influence technical strategy, and help foster a team culture built on curiosity, craftsmanship, and care. You’ll often lead without authority, earning influence through deep technical insight, sound judgment, and a reputation for raising the bar.
What You’ll Do
- Architect and lead the development of critical systems, services, and infrastructure — with a focus on reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
- Partner with product and program leaders to ensure engineering solutions align with user needs, regulatory requirements, and business outcomes.
- Set and evolve technical standards across the organization. Proactively address tech debt, guide code review quality, and drive initiatives that improve team velocity and code quality.
- Coach and mentor engineers across teams — helping them grow their craft, navigate ambiguity, and develop in their careers.
- Investigate and evaluate new technologies to drive innovation, simplify complexity, and support scale.
- Contribute directly to codebases, especially for architectural foundations, prototypes, and complex or high-risk areas.
- Serve as a multiplier, identifying gaps, facilitating collaboration, and unblocking teams without taking over.
- Uphold and strengthen our engineering culture, with a commitment to curiosity, learning, integrity, and positive team dynamics.
- Help recruit and onboard exceptional talent, contributing to a team that reflects our values and mission.
What You’ll Need
- 12+ years of experience as an engineer across multiple tech stacks, with deep experience building and scaling distributed systems.
- Proven ability to operate as a technical leader — setting direction, influencing others, and delivering results without formal authority.
- Strong foundation in software engineering best practices, including CI/CD, observability, automated testing, and infrastructure as code.
- Experience with cloud-native systems (preferably AWS), including containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Solid knowledge of relational and non-relational databases,
- Demonstrated success in a highly regulated environment, preferably healthcare, with an understanding of compliance and data protection (e.g., HIPAA).
- Effective communicator and cross-functional collaborator, comfortable representing engineering in executive conversations and product strategy.
- Passion for teaching, mentoring, and cultivating a high-trust, high-autonomy team environment.
What We Offer
- Meaningful Impact: The work we do directly enables medical breakthroughs — such as earlier cancer detection, better Alzheimer's treatments, AI diagnostics that save lives. This isn't abstract; it's the reason our health system partners invest in us.
- Career-Defining Opportunity: You'll have a front-row seat to every aspect of building a category-defining company—strategy, operations, fundraising, M&A, scaling.
- Exceptional Team: Work alongside a founder with a track record of building and exiting healthcare technology companies, backed by investors who are true partners.
- Competitive Package: Competitive salary, equity, comprehensive benefits, and hybrid work flexibility.
- Values-Driven Culture: We’re building a team grounded in Avandra’s 5 Core Values that guide how we show up every day:
- WIN with Integrity
- Radical Accountability

Principal Software Engineer Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal software engineer in Ohio?
Reaching a principal software engineer role in Ohio typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline, followed by progressive engineering experience that includes system design ownership and cross-team technical influence. Ohio employers do not require a state-issued license for software engineering, so advancement depends on demonstrating architectural impact, mentoring others, and leading initiatives that affect the broader product or platform. Ohio's large enterprise employers in Columbus and Cleveland routinely promote from within for these roles.
How much do principal software engineers make in Ohio?
Principal software engineers in Ohio earn a median of about $114,090 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,790 for the lowest 10% to over $168,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal software engineers in Ohio?
Employers hiring principal software engineers in Ohio right now include Northrop Grumman, CVS Health, and BAE Systems USA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Ohio's mix of Fortune 500 headquarters, major financial institutions, and established healthcare systems gives principal-level engineers a wide range of industry contexts to choose from across the state.
Which Ohio cities have the most principal software engineer jobs?
Columbus, Cincinnati, and Beavercreek have the most principal software engineer openings in Ohio. Columbus leads because it is home to the headquarters of large insurance, retail, and financial services companies that maintain substantial engineering organizations, while Cleveland and Cincinnati contribute through their own concentrations of healthcare technology, manufacturing software, and regional banking institutions that require senior technical leadership.
Are there remote principal software engineer jobs in Ohio?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of principal software engineer openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly software engineering work can be done without a fixed office. The responsibilities most commonly performed remotely include architecture reviews, code reviews, and cross-team technical strategy sessions, while some Ohio employers still prefer on-site presence for hands-on platform or infrastructure work.
How can I get hired as a principal software engineer in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic path for someone without direct principal-level experience is to join a large Ohio employer as a senior software engineer and pursue promotion from within. Companies such as Nationwide, Huntington Bank, and major healthcare systems in Columbus and Cleveland hire senior engineers into roles that carry a clear path to principal scope. Building a strong portfolio of system design projects, contributing to open-source architecture decisions, and earning a cloud certification such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate gives candidates a concrete edge when applying for those bridge roles.
Where can I find and apply to principal software engineer jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to principal software engineer jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current Ohio openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialization, and apply directly to each one without any additional sign-up step required.
