Professor Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a professor job in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh's academic market is driven by its concentration of research universities, medical schools, and professional colleges in Oakland and surrounding neighborhoods, so the strongest candidates arrive with a completed doctoral degree, a visible publication record, and teaching experience in their discipline. Roles in STEM, health sciences, and technology-adjacent fields see the highest competition, while applied and professional programs in business, education, and engineering also hire regularly. Presenting at regional conferences and connecting with Pittsburgh-based academic departments directly accelerates the search.
Which companies hire professors in Pittsburgh?
Companies currently hiring professors in Pittsburgh include University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Carlow College, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pittsburgh's hiring base is unusually broad, mixing large research universities and academic medical centers with smaller liberal arts colleges and professional schools that together keep faculty demand active year-round.
Are there remote professor jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, though professor roles are less remote-friendly than desk-based positions given the emphasis on in-person instruction, lab supervision, and student advising. About 0% of professor openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a modest but growing share. Online and continuing education programs housed at Pittsburgh institutions tend to offer the most flexibility for fully remote teaching assignments.
How can I get a professor job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is an adjunct or visiting instructor position, which local universities and community colleges use extensively to staff courses when full-time faculty lines are limited. Carnegie Mellon University, Community College of Allegheny County, and Duquesne University are among the Pittsburgh institutions that regularly bring on adjuncts across disciplines. Building a course portfolio, earning strong student evaluations, and pursuing internal postdoctoral or lecturer appointments creates a documented record that positions candidates competitively for tenure-track openings when they arise.

Most professor openings in Pittsburgh sit in Education, Science & Research, and Non-Profit & Social Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pittsburgh's identity as a hub for robotics, biomedical research, and technology transfer means those fields generate consistent faculty demand, while the city's large hospital systems sustain hiring in clinical and health sciences education.
