Professor Jobs in Charlottesville: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a professor job in Charlottesville?
The strongest path is targeting Charlottesville's dominant employer, the University of Virginia, along with nearby community colleges and research institutions in the Grounds and Fontaine Research Park areas. Candidates with active research portfolios, published work, and experience in high-demand disciplines such as engineering, medicine, law, and data science have a clear edge. Attending UVA department colloquia and networking with local faculty also opens doors that online applications alone do not.
Which companies hire professors in Charlottesville?
Charlottesville professor roles are posted by University of Virginia and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring tends to be led by research universities, community colleges, and specialized professional schools concentrated in and around the UVA Grounds and Fontaine Research Park neighborhoods.
Are there remote professor jobs in Charlottesville?
Yes, though only for specific role types. Hands-on or lab-based professorships require on-site presence, while online program faculty and some adjunct roles can be fully remote. About 30% of professor openings tied to Charlottesville are remote or hybrid as of July 2026. Online degree programs affiliated with Charlottesville institutions are the most common source of remote teaching positions in this market.
How can I get a professor job in Charlottesville with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point locally is an adjunct or visiting instructor role at the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, or a nearby liberal arts college. These positions are regularly filled by candidates who are ABD or recently credentialed and offer a path to full-time consideration. Teaching assistantships and postdoctoral research appointments within UVA departments also provide the Charlottesville classroom experience that hiring committees value most for competitive faculty searches.
