Curriculum Specialist Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a curriculum specialist in Virginia?
Most Virginia school divisions require curriculum specialists to hold a valid Virginia Department of Education license with a relevant endorsement, typically in curriculum and instruction, administration and supervision, or a content area. You earn that license through an approved educator preparation program and by meeting the Virginia Board of Education's requirements. Candidates moving into district-level curriculum roles often start as classroom teachers and pursue a master's degree in curriculum and instruction to qualify for specialist positions.
How much do curriculum specialists make in Virginia?
Curriculum specialists in Virginia earn a median of about $83,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,310 for the lowest 10% to over $131,940 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire curriculum specialists in Virginia?
Employers hiring curriculum specialists in Virginia right now include Hatalom, Stride, and Dynamis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's large federal contracting sector means private firms supporting government training programs are a significant source of openings alongside traditional school divisions and universities.
Which Virginia cities have the most curriculum specialist jobs?
Virginia, Ashburn, and Fairfax are the Virginia cities with the most curriculum specialist openings. Northern Virginia's concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and large suburban school systems like Fairfax County Public Schools drives the bulk of demand, while Richmond's role as the state capital anchors district-level and Virginia Department of Education-adjacent positions, and Hampton Roads' mix of military installations and urban school divisions adds steady volume.
How can I get hired as a curriculum specialist in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through classroom teaching, which Virginia school divisions treat as foundational experience for any curriculum role. Look for curriculum resource teacher or instructional coach postings within large Virginia divisions such as Fairfax County, Prince William County, or Virginia Beach City Public Schools, which are stepping-stone titles that do not require prior specialist experience. Building a portfolio of curriculum maps, unit plans aligned to Virginia Standards of Learning, and documented professional development sessions strengthens applications considerably and can substitute for formal specialist titles.
Where can I find and apply to curriculum specialist jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to curriculum specialist jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across school divisions, universities, and private employers. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
