Childcare Center Director Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a childcare center director in Virginia?
To become a childcare center director in Virginia, you must obtain a Child Care Director credential through the Virginia Department of Social Services, which oversees childcare center licensing statewide. Candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development, along with documented hours of experience working directly with children in a licensed setting. Virginia also requires directors to complete specific pre-service and annual training hours covering health, safety, and child development topics.
Which companies hire childcare center directors in Virginia?
Employers hiring childcare center directors in Virginia right now include LLE Education, Childcare Network, and Community Care and Learning Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Virginia's mix of large federal contractor communities in Northern Virginia, university towns, and military installations creates sustained demand across both national childcare chains and locally operated nonprofit centers.
Which Virginia cities have the most childcare center director jobs?
The Virginia cities with the most childcare center director openings are Richmond, Arlington, and New Market. Northern Virginia's dense federal workforce and high family concentration drive the largest share of postings, while Richmond's growth as a mid-size metro with expanding corporate headquarters and Virginia Beach's large military and civilian family population each sustain active hiring markets for center leadership roles.
Are there remote childcare center director jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Childcare center director work is inherently on-site, requiring daily oversight of children, staff, and physical facilities. About 0% of childcare center director openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those postings typically cover curriculum coordination, program consulting, or regional oversight roles rather than day-to-day center management.
How can I get hired as a childcare center director in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into an assistant director or lead teacher role at a Virginia-licensed center, then building toward the director credential. Large Virginia operators such as Bright Horizons and the YMCA regularly hire site coordinators and program supervisors who can grow into director positions. Completing the Virginia Child Care Director credential coursework early, even before you hold the title, signals readiness to Virginia employers and strengthens any internal promotion case.
Where can I find and apply to childcare center director jobs in Virginia?
